Im laying in bed about 5:30 this morning and hear a knock on the door, I blow it off. then I hear the doorbell ring. Im thinking what the heck is someone doing knocking on my door before 6am...its still dark outside and im thinking it means trouble.

I look out the peephole and no one is there, so I lay back in bed wondering who/why it was.
Next I heard the doorbell ring again followed by LOUD knocking on the door.
This spooks my wife out of the shower and I grab my gun, I look out the peephole and there is a dark figure about 10" away from my door.

I pull my slide back and chamber a 9mm HP hydroshock, ready to fire.
When I open the door (gun loaded and ready but out of view in my right hand) I see that it is a Cop, he approaches and ask if I have a dog.

Someone had called our address in for having a dog that wouldnt stop barking. (we only have cats, its a false alarm...wrong address or someones idea of a bad joke)

I tell him hold on, I need to unload my gun...you spooked us.
He said fine. So I closed the door then eject the shell from the chamber and take the clip out and lay the gun on the table.
We talk a few minutes then he asks for my DL to verify this is my house.

He apologizes then finally he leaves.
It could have went south, I almost walked off my porch with the gun but thought better.

My boss who was a cop said I handled it exactly as I should have, except that its better to probably not even open the door.
Have the cop show his badge through the peephole..

It was good to have a gun in the situation. Had it been someone intent on harming my family I was prepared and able to defend them.

You handled that very well No2flesh, I had a situation happen to me about 2 weeks ago. On a saturday afternoon, there was a knock at the door and this well dressed (white shirt and tie), rather large and imposing looking fellow was on my porch holding a bottle of Tide detergent. I asked what he wanted and he starts giving me this sales pitch, though, I cant hear him and asked him to repeat himself. Well he reaches for the door and I reach for my Glock, that is IWB at 4 o'clock at the same time, and told him not to touch my door (in a command voice), and that I'm not interested. My wife and daughter are at home, so I'm not about to let this guy into my house. He gets a puzzled look on his face when he sees me reach for the back of my hip. He then tries to reach for the door again, and then I said, "I told you dont touch my door! He then drops his hand, mumbles something and walks away.

XD, no doubt some people use the "sales pitch" persona to do bad things.
Not to mention some even dressing as police officers.
We cant be too careful now days, especially if its our duty to protect a family.

We also have a no soliciting sign on our door, so if someone I dont know
knocks they are already on my bad side.

2 of my friends have had things similiar happen to them lately too.
One of them didnt answer the door with his gun in hand (4am), it turned out ok
but he said he will never do that again.
Turned out it was also the cops, who needed access to the back of his property.

I have formulated a plan...my wife and kids will go to the safe room with her gun and a cell phone. I will defend the path to that place.

Next time, in a situation such as this I will call 911 and defend my door from the inside.
Opening the door isnt really nessesary and increases the risks Ive read.

How do you get a 95 Nissan pickup truck to sound like a Harley?

Answer: Remove the catalytic converter.

Last night, someone stole mine and you can imagine my surprise when I started it this morning.

Sometimes I really get sick and tired of the crappy neighborhood I live in!

Yeah, someone knocks on my door at 5am, they will definately be staring down the barrel of a gun. You did the right thing.

Well, I no longer have my rifle, but I do have a special bat that is really bad. I painted it white so I could see it easier in the dark shadows. It's really hard, short, and I can move/swing really fast with it.

I have considered getting a pistol; maybe a Glock, but just haven't gotten around to doing it.

I just noticed this thread and I have to say something:

Do you honestly think that someone who is banging on your door at 5:30 in the morning wants to kill you??? Do you think that anyone would be that stupid? Have you ever stopped to think that maybe that person REALLY had something important to tell you and had no idea that the person on the other side of the door was thinking of blowing him away?

If I was in the shower and I found out that my husband was aiming a gun at some poor guy banging on the door...well!!! I would tell him to USE THE BRAINS GOD GAVE HIM!

Sometimes I feel you guys want to be Mad Max or something....

We don't need that..Sheesh....

I think people cannot be too careful.
I wonder why the cops did not CALL you instead of coming to knock on your door?
If they have your address they can get your phone number. I'd much rather they called me instead of coming a-knocking and banging on my door.

I had a situation happen to me a few years back.
I live on a busy street in a town of a little over 10,000.
So I had my little dog not too long, and was trying to housebreak him. So every chance I got, I'd take him out on the leash. So this particular night, I took him out on the leash, out in my front yard, on the sidewalk. I've never been afraid here and wasn't concerned about being out in MY front yard at 1 or 2:00 in the night.
So we're out there on the sidewalk and I notice a guy walking down the street. He hears us out in my yard, and he TURNS around and starts back towards me.
I grabbed that dog and inside we went!
I looked out my window and he went in between the next two houses towards the back of their houses.
I didn't call the police because I was afraid if I did report it, and with him knowing EXACTLY which house I lived in......and I KNEW they wouldn't keep someone in jail just for walking down the street and then turning around and coming back in the opposite direction. He didn't actually DO anything......but it looked to me like he might have been having thoughts of doing something. So I just stayed inside, everything was locked up and just waited to see if anything else would happen.....nothing did.
But I don't understand why people act like that......did he have thoughts of doing something? I'll never know. But I know this......I know that I cannot be too careful since then.
