What churches/denominations are to be avoided at all costs?
Title has my question. I personally attend a good church, it's an Evangelical Covenant Church. But I am curious which are the farthest departed from Jesus' gospel.

You will likely get lists that conflict with each other. For instance, I would avoid a church that was independent of a denomination or other oversight group. The reasons are that the pastor and church board have no human accountablity. Yes, they are accountable to God, but they have no one to hold them up, to provide guidance, or older pastors to go to if they have questions or issues in the church. They only have themselves and the people of that congregation. To me that is scary.

Since they consider themselves Christian, I'm mentioning LDS (Church of the Latter Day Saints) and Mormons (interchangeable)

For the most part I would agree, and the house church movement get real close to the emergent, for example. However, Calvary Chapels are not part of any denomination, and most are pretty solid. :hat
