Hi Everyone,
My mom is 87 and my dad is 90. When I became a Christian 22 years ago, I tried witnessing to my Dad. He told me in no uncertain terms not to ever talk to him about God, Jesus, etc. again.

Both my parents have been non practicing Catholics since I became an adult. As a child, they were active in the church, attended all services, and I went through all the catechism classes.

Anyway, they are still both healthy and alert, but in small ways their health is beginning to fail. I have been praying for their salvation since I was saved. They have seen me and my wife raise our family as faithful Christians, as best we could. So they know this is not a temporary "phase" we are going through.

They are avid readers and I think the only way for me to get them to make a decision for Christ will come through a book, or at least be a starting point for discussion. In recent years, when we try to talk about God with them, they smile and condescend saying they are too old for that stuff.

Can anyone out there recommend some written resources that would appeal to them in their stage of life?

Thank you kindly,
Paul

I don't know if you feel this book might help, but -

I recently read the book The Journey, by Billy Graham. Published in 2006. From the BGEA website:

"The Journey is Billy Graham’s definitive work on living life, overcoming suffering and disappointment, and celebrating joy; each day full with significance. Mr. Graham writes that God meant for our lives “to be filled with joy and purpose, with even the most ordinary events being part of His plan.” This clear, readable, and understandable new book will impact your personal journey."

I found his book to be very inspiring. He helped me see how to improve my life by showing how the Lord can be all in our lives - even the common daily life.

"One Minute After You Die" - Erwin Lutzer

Same problem here... no one in my family is saved and doesn't want to talk about God or talk to me.

It's odd that they would say they are "too old for that stuff" when they are even closer to death. :ohno

I sent several copies of this book to friends and relatives who are religious or know about God, the Bible, and Jesus... but yet, do not understand true salvation:

The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus, by John R. Cross
(A Clear and Simple Explanation of the World's Best Seller)

You can read the reviews of it on Amazon, I believe. Many folks testify that after reading this book, they have understood the Bible for the very first time!

Seems like a book that no one would object to reading, being "tame" and all... but really, it is quite impactful. :) I recommend it!

:thinking Since they are Catholics, good possibility that they have not read the Bible. The Bible would be my first suggestion.:preach

Amen! Starting out with the book of John and then move onto 1 John.

The Gospel of John, and the book of Romans are good places to start.

Also, though they are non-practicing Catholics, they may still have some residual 'faith' in that false system that they are counting on to put them in good stead.
A good book for them might be: "The Gospel According to Rome" by James G. McCarthy.

Blessings to you as you witness to your elderly parents. :)
