My 8yr old DS wants a MP3 player to down load the Adventures in Odyssey shows on.
I have no idea what would be best for his age and his purpose, any help would be great. I did read the other thread on MP3 players. That helped a little. Do some of them take disk things or are they just what you use to download stuff? Saw one for the Bible in a Christian catalog. (I'd like one for that.:nod)

The one I have & the one DD!, has both came with software that we had to down load on the computer after that. We just down loaded the music we wanted to listen to or whatever we wanted. If you have any of the Adventures in Odyssey, you will need to save it to the computer then down load from the computer. Most of the MP3, players will tell you how much memory it has at lease the ones that we have. I'm, not sure if this helps maybe someone can help you better. All the players that we have ever had came with a booklet of instructions to help answer any of your questions.

First question would be:
How will you get Adventures in Odyssey (Purchase CD, etc.).
Second question is:
What computer and OS do you use?
My 8 year old listens to Odyssey, The Pond, and Jungle Jam on his iPod. He is capable of syncing the iPod to the computer by himself. Currently he has a really old iPod hand-me-down, but he wants a nano (Maybe for Christmas).
Personally I strongly prefer iPods and find them to be and excellent value, but many on this forum have strong differing opinions. - You will have to go with what you are most comfortable with.
I suggest you take your kiddo to a best buy, etc. and let him try the devices out. Otherwise you may be the one managing the device, or it may go idle if its too frustrating. My other kids first MP3s were Rio devices, and I spent a fair amount of time taking care of the music for them. On the other hand, such brands can sometimes be a bit cheaper, may have a radio built-in, and can be more flexible.

ConsumingFire, PacMan and I have been having a debate about this on this thread (http://rr-bb.com/showthread.php?t=55214). I would recommend something like this (http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/mp3-players/m/14985791/st=product/sv=title/) for a simple Mp3 player. If you want to get something that does everything you could ever want plus wireless internet, you could go with something like this (http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/portable-media-players/m/47729253/search=archos%20605%20wifi/st=product/sv=title/) (or the 4GB version (http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/portable-media-players/m/62715646/search=archos%20605%20wifi/st=product/sv=title/) that uses SD cards (http://computers.pricegrabber.com/flash-memory/m/36856927/search=sd%20card/st=product/sv=title/)). I would not recommend an iPod because you don't get what you pay for. You can get a better Mp3 player for the same money. Also, your stuck using iTunes (which I find to be a very difficult to use program, especially with an iPod shuffle.)

OK. So instead of just letting the debate sit, "ghetto guy" had brought it to another thread. :)
Disagreeing with ghetto guy, I think you get more than you pay for with an iPod. But then I value my time, elegance, user interface, ease of use ,etc. iPods absolutely do not win on the total features per dollar, but they provide the best value and the best overall user experience. If you want to go higher end, there is nothing on the market that has the user interface of an iPod Touch, with integrated web browsing, PDA functionality, application store, games, multi-touch, etc. Your mileage may vary. And if you want to: manage your player manually; move around your own files; use third party rippers or codecs; don't care for iTunes software; run Linux etc. (or enjoy taking care all that for your kiddo), then and iPod is probably not for you. iPods are not for all people, but there are solid reasons that they own the majority of the MP3 player market share.
You can pick up and iPod that has been factory refurbished to save a bit here:

My eight year old is saving up his own money to get a refurbished nano. So he has been pulling weeds, etc. to try and earn more than his allowance. He wants the 8GB black one, which will set him back $149. Its a lot of money to save up for him.

I'm just saying, I really don't want to debate anymore. (I think it's called trolling and if it isn't against the rules it should be)

I think I said that wrong. I was the one that was trolling on the other thread. Not accusing you of anything ConsumingFire

We both value different things in our music technology. That means we both ended up making the right but different choices. Neither choice is wrong or better than the other, it is all boils down to the value we place on the various parameters.
Apple, SanDisk or Archos, hopefully DebJo will arrive the best alternative specific to her situation.

Robert
