I want to buy a laptop for my son - his computer is about 4 years old. Has anyone seen any insane sales for back to school? $300 ish or less? Not a mini laptop, something decent. I haven't heard of computer sales slowing down like car sales and such. (By the way, several car lots have gone out of business in my town this summer)

Do you watch the Sunday newspaper ads? Most electronic stores will have some deals, but be prepared to pay over twice that amount before rebates.

$300 won't get a very nice laptop. Maybe a used one that is older than the one he has.
I found this one (http://computers.pricegrabber.com/laptop/m/47074617/st=product/sv=title/) that is only $482.
If you don't mind doing a little bidding you could go for something like this (http://www.propertyroom.com/itemdetails.aspx?l=5925634).
There is a site that has insane deals every day. Usually its just one featured product but you could watch there for a nice laptop. Link (http://www.woot.com/).

I agree. There is no $300, decent laptop. It will be dead very quickly. My sister bought a $400 Compaq laptop, and she sold it, non-working, in less than a year. You do often get what you pay for.

For a decent new laptop, plan to dish out $550.00+.
My friend bought a new compaq w/Vista, 2 Gigs of ram with a 120 Gb HD for 550.00. It was on sale at Staples. Look around, you just might land a good deal.

But for $300-ish, I would try ebay.com

Yes. I have an IBM laptop that I bought used and it has survived more than any laptop should.

I've seen some good deals at ebay. Just be careful of the seller. Check his rating.

Ghetto guy, what are your sys spec?

2.0GHz Pentium 4M
It came with a 40GB hard drive that lasted a long time but when it died, I replaced it with an 80GB
DVD ROM/ CD burner combo drive
ATI Graphics
And the reliability that only comes from an IBM
(I have also been through 3 power supplies, so remember to unplug it at night)

Go to newegg.com and get a toshiba. For a decent laptop expect to spend AT LEAST $550-$900. It's best to get a laptop that has the most current technology you can afford because it will be outdated before you know it.
