View Full Version : WHOA! Big dial-up charge, advice

Our dial-up bill had $61 tacked on - the guy at the ISP says it looks like our modem is not disconnecting when we shut the computer down, so we are going over our allotted minutes. It is an external modem. Does this sound legitimate, or could someone be using our service without our knowing? Any advice? (I'm going to be disconnecting from the wall jack until we figure this out!!)

Did you get the modem from your ISP, and is it still under warranty? If so i'd get them to replace it and waive the fee.
If it's a dial-up modem you'd know if it wasn't disconnecting though, because you wouldn't be able to use your telephone. If you've never noticed that i'd say it's more likely to be a fault or error at their end than at yours.

No, I was wrong - the modem is internal - came with the computer. And we have a separate phone line for the internet, so that's why we don't notice if it is connected or not.

shutdown the computer, and or unplug the phone line
if they still say you are connected it's the modems on their side, not yours
