Hi all! I just had unexpected surgery this week-end to remove my gall bladder. It hurts!!! I had no symptoms at all and had no idea there was anything wrong until I had the worst stomach pain of my life and went to the ER.

Has anyone else had this surgery? Can you tell me what if anything changed for you afterwards? Diet, weight loss/gain, etc.?

Any tips to make recovery faster/better, etc.?

Thanks!!

I had mine out. It was rather simple surgery for me. I couldn't laugh due to the muscles but recovery was quick. The only food I have problems with are Mexican refried beans.. maybe some very greasy food. aside from that no problems. No weight loss :ohno and no weight gain.:thumb

Praying you'll feel better asap!

Oh.. I could tell right away that nasty thing was gone and not needed!

I had my gall bladder removed after suffering for 5 years...it all started when I was pregnant with my youngest child...

I had surgery on a Monday, had to have a "scope" on tuesday (to remove the rest of the stones that were lodged close to my pancreas). Went home Wednesday, drove the kids to school Thursday, laid low for a few days and a week later cooked a full Thanksgiving dinner.

I still SHOULD avoid greasy and fried foods (but I don't)...we won't discuss what happens when I eat too much of them.

I lost about 30 lbs the last 6 months before the surgery when virtually anything would cause an attack, but after that, I was fine. I have gained some weight, but I attribute that more to a sedentary lifestyle and peri-menopause....

Thanks all for your prayers and experiences.

I guess I am a bit worried that this will cause some weight gain because I read that your gall bladder helps digest fat. So, if I don't have a gall bladder, does the fat just accumulate? Aaaghghgh, please nooo! I have enough fat as it is!!

On the other hand, I am hoping maybe I won't be able to digest fat and it will just flush out in my urine--Oh joy! Then, I can finally be rid of my thighs!

LOL - can you tell I am a bit loopy from the pain meds? And, waaay too much time on my hands sittin' here recoverin.

Did I mention how much this hurts? Owwwwwww.........

Ummm...the fat won't come out in your urine. All I can say is be VERY Careful when you eat fatty or greasy foods.
The gall bladder is a tiny organ that holds bile, which digests fats. Your body secretes it into your small intestine to break down the fats as they go through your system. Without the gall bladder, the liver still secretes bile, but there's none stored. SO, if you eat a particularly greasy or fatty meal, not all the fat or grease gets digested. It won't make you fat.
Getting fat is still a function of more calories in than expended through daily living and exercise.

If you'd like to know exactly what the aftereffects are of a greasy or fatty meal is, feel free to PM me, I don't want to describe the effects in a public forum.

Your body won't be able to handle fat, and so you'll have problems with diarrhea. That's what happened to me after I had my gallbladder removed.

It doesn't happen nearly so often anymore, thank the Lord, but it was a regular problem during the early years after my surgery.

(Guess you don't need to P.M. GettingThere now, jryanna!! :D)

My daughter just had hers out about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Her doctor said that weight gain is a very rare side effect for most people.

She felt awful for a couple of days. About a week afterwards, she was back to work and feeling great. She eats anything, and is happy that she can eat things she had to avoid for a year or so without problems again. She said that the way to avoid weight gain is to watch portion sizes, since she can't exercise for about 6 weeks!
