I was reading Hebrews the other evening, chapter 10. I am confused by verse 29 (and the verses following). Is this speaking to one who falls away after being saved and talking about what the punishment would be like? Could someone please clear this confusion up?
Heb 10:29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

26For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,The sin in view here is not accepting Christs sacrifice for the Jew, the one who was under the sacrifices prescribed by Moses. Under the law they were commanded to sacrifice for sin. Christ took it away, He was the sacrifice. They can't go back to the law, God gave Himself as the sacrifice. So if they reject what God provided, where could they go?
27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
The Lord is deadly serious that Christ fulfilled the laws which required the sacrifice. He was the sacrifice for sin. He came to His people, the house of Israel. We Gentiles share in everything, 'the promises are yes and amen in Christ', but it needs understood firstly as to the Jew.
28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:Another allusion to those under the law of Moses, the Jews.
29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? It is the highest insult to God for the Jew to not accept the atonement Christ provided. It was God's plan to do it this way.
30For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
It was a fearful thing, and they did fall under His judgment.
32But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;
33Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. 34For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.
35Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. 37For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. 38Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
39But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.Paul speaks of his direct knowledge of them and his experiences with them.
This truly is directed at those who were undergoing the change from the law of Moses to the "lamb who was slain", Christ.
There are things we can glean for ourselves, but we must first understand this scripture as clearly as possible, then we can find avenues for ourselves in our day. :hat

Whew, okay that makes things clearer for me. Thank you so much. I was lost working my way through those verses when I read them the other night and figured I was not understanding it rightly.
It's wonderful having a place to bring my questions. Otherwise I'd be waiting to ask my pastor and sometimes that's longer than I want to have to wait.

You're welcome friend.
This is such a good scripture. I love what it is saying here, and has encouraged me studying it again.
32But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; It must have been very difficult for a Hebrew back then to point to Christ alone. To face those who were demanding they conform to all the customs and to the law of Moses. Today we run into those who desire us to look to Christ plus something. And you will be opposed if your claim is Christ and Him alone, nothing from me. For them it was much more difficult, seems to me.
33Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. 34For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.Paul was opposed at every turn with his message that God gave him. And those who also spread this gospel were opposed as well, and they themselves suffered the same by standing by them. It is difficult when your claim is the sufficiency of His sacrifice. But He gives us the testimony (evidence) of our salvation by giving us the Spirit. (Hebrews 10:16)
39But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
We can have confidence in what Jesus did!
It is by faith in Christ and His sacrifice that we can approach the throne of God in boldness, believing the promises. But we endure and keep the faith till the end. Faith in Him and His once and for all sacrifice. Whatever afflictions and tribulations we face, we look to Christ.
