Yes, I know, we should never have bought a computer with Vista. We've had it for over a year now, and Outlook is becoming more and more of a problem.

Our machine is a Dell DM061
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate
And using: MS Office Outlook 2007 part of MS Office Small Business 2007

Anywho, Outlook often will open, and tell us it needs to operate in safe mode. Fine. Open in Safe Mode. But if you close it out and open it again, it often won't reopen unless the computer is restarted. Then when it is opened, a window will open up in internet explorer wanting us to report the error. I've checked the website out, it is a legitimate Microsoft site.

All of the searching I've come across has stated that there are some issues with Vista and Outlook, but nothing specifically that relates to our problem.

We have McAfee, but I don't think this is a virus.

Any ideas? Do we need to reinstall Outlook?

Sometimes the antivirus module, that hooks into outlook, can sometimes go bad. Try uninstalling mcaffe and then run Outlook. If it work then bingo. Try reinstalling mcaffe, or switch to another product. Avast is great and it's free.

If that's the case then it might just be easier to switch to a different email client (personally i'd say the BEST thing to do would be switch to a different OS, but I understand that's a big jump)

There's a good free email client called Thunderbird that can replace Outlook quite happily. You'll need to install a plugin for it to check Hotmail, but other email accounts that allow POP access (like Gmail) work just fine out of the box.

It's by the folks that do Firefox, so you can trust it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass them along to my husband.

Update:

We've fixed the problem, and I wanted to share what we did in case others were in the same situation.

After some digging, my husband discovered that others with the same problem uninstalled their business contacts manager from Outlook. Apparantly that particular program has issues. We don't need business contacts manager, so we uninstalled it. Problem solved!
