Okay, I wasn't really worried about this transition since I have cable, but after Ike I started thinking... what if a disaster came and I just wanted to use our little TV with an antenna? I had cable through most of the hurricane, but it was out for about 6 hours.... my Mom's across the street was out for days. I could run everything with my generator and keep up with what was going on, but during the worst of the storm and we had no cable I felt so lost!
Should we all get one of those converter boxes just in case? What does everyone think?

If there was a disaster, would watching TV be a big deal? You'd be able to get any important announcements by radio.

Yes, get the boxes while they are cheap. Or get a small HD TV.

I know, but during the hurricane we could track it visibly and see when it was over us and then when the worst was over. The radio just didn't cut it for me at a time like that.

Or get rid of the TV altogether. I get all my news from the radio and the internet and it saves me a ton of money on cable or satellite costs.
