I know nothing, except a few months ago we cashed in our kids' savings bonds, and bought gold and silver for them, instead. Something tangible, instead of a paper promise.

I'm gonna have to start asking my grandmother about mine. Maybe I'll call tonight.

Must be. It was my mom who bought the kids' bonds. We didn't tell her about the cash-in, and pm purchase. She thinks everything is hunky-dory with the financial system, so she would just be mad.

Go ahead and buy them. If the credit of the U.S. government tanks, you have many other worries first. I just cashed in a few to pay for my daughter's planned wedding.

Bonds are still safe as long as the government doesn't tank. But there are more rewarding investments. I have some bonds that are about 10 years old and I have made less then $4 a year in interest. Now if at the time, I had bought the same amount in silver coins, I would have doubled by money by now. and the government couldn't tax me on the coins. Also, the bonds, and the money in my savings account, counted against me when I applied for finacial aid for college.
