Mediterranean Union agrees on Arab-Israeli role

MARSEILLE, France (AFP) — Foreign ministers from the new Mediterranean Union have agreed for Israel and the Arab League to take part side-by-side, diplomats said on Tuesday.

They also agreed to have Barcelona as the location for the new Union's headquarters.

He said ministers had agreed to grant the Arab League full participant status, in exchange for one of five deputy secretary-general posts going to Israel for an initial two- or three-year period.

The Mediterranean Union's French and Egyptian co-chairs were expected to formally announced their decision at a closing press conference scheduled for 2:30 pm (1330 GMT).

Barcelona, 4 Nov. (AKI) - The Spanish city of Barcelona will host the new Union for the Mediterranean announced by European leaders on Monday. Foreign ministers from across Europe reached agreement in the French city of Marseille after two days of talks at a conference to finalise the 'Barcelona Process'.

Tunisia and Malta were vying with Barcelona to be the new headquarters of the organisation. As a compromise for Barcelona's designation as the host city, the secretary-general of the organisation will be chosen from the southern Mediterranean.

The organisation will also have five deputy secretary-generals, one of whom will be Israeli and another Palestinian.

Wow-everything was just AWFULLY quiet the last week or so(aside from the election, that is), especially the activity on this board yesterday.

The Spanish prime minister has called for an international effort to resolve cultural and religious differences between the Western and Muslim world.

Mr Zapatero said he had asked the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, to set up a high level group to study the creation of an alliance of civilisations.

The BBC's Michael Buchanan says the Spanish prime minister is trying to position his country as a bridge between Europe and north Africa. (*** i.e. the New Mediterranean Union, the Resurrected Roman Empire of Daniel 2)
He succeeded it's headquarters is in Barcelona Spain!


Since then he and KJC took the Alliance of Civilizations proposal to the UN and it was adopted and they had their first global meeting Jan 2007 in Madrid

And now King Juan Carlos is hosting a global "interfaith" meeting at the UN
