Watching Lou Dobbs tonight, yes…I took notes. He had a segment on about the visas the U.S. gave out last year.

Here are the visas that are currently in effect, who they pertain to and how many wer given out:

H-visa 372,246
American companies use this to replace American workers w/low skilled workers such as farm workers, unskilled workers

E-visa 40,439
For foreign trade workers

I-visa 15,514
for foreign journalists

L-visa 134,597
for workers of foreign companies who are then able to work here

O-visa 12,599
defined as “extraordinary ability workers such as actors and academic leaders

P-visa 33,745
for entertainers and artists

R-visa 11,950
for religious workers such as priests, ministers and Imams

NAFTA visas 5,571

All in all the U.S. issued over 600,00 visas last year but Bush says we need more guest-worker programs:rolleyes

According to reports, the L-visa is the most dangerous as there are no wage requirements, no cap on how many a company may hire, is a threat to the U.S. workforce, and companies are using this in conjunction with the H-visa. About half of these visas were given to Indian (India) workers last year. Projections say this is just the beginning, that the use of these two visas is just going to increase.

Then Lou did a segment on the Chinese tires that are bad and blowing out. It seems the manufacturer of these tires claims they can’t refund money for the bad tires. Our government refuses to recall them. So in an effort to educate so no one buys these tires, here are the brands you should avoid buying:

WESTLAKE
COMPASS
TELLURIDE

Well, if Lou classified H visas as "used to replace American workers w/low skilled workers such as farm workers, unskilled workers", he's misleading people.

There are several classes of visa within the H visa. H-1B visas, which make up the bulk of the H visa class, are not "low skilled" farm workers...they're highly skilled computer technicians, engineers, and the like. They're typically the people who have come here from India, Pakistan, China, Korea to go to school, and then who stick around afterwards to work for American companies and use their Masters and PhD's.

My DIL who is Australian is working on her visa to live in the US with my son. It will take her over a year from time of application. She applied at the beginning of April and it hasn't even been looked at yet.
