Speaking this morning, the Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zaptero, has said that Barack Obama, the President elect of the United States will have a friend and faithful ally in Spain.
Zapatero said that he thought that Spain’s relationship with the United States would become ‘more fluid’ from now, and that a more promising horizon was opening for a more just world.
The election of Obama means that the Zapatero administration can put their tense relationship with George W. Bush behind them. Zapatero said he hoped to work with Obama on matters of common interest, such as Latin America, the Middle East and the Muslim world, and that the forthcoming Spanish presidency of the European Union in 2010 would have strengthening cross-Atlantic ties among its priorities.
