AN entire town is being evacuated as swollen rivers continue to rise in Gippsland, while several floods victims have been plucked to safety by helicopter and boats.

At least 30 people are being rescued at Newry, west of Maffra, with raging flood waters swirling into homes. Victoria Police say the whole town is now being evacuated.

3,500 people rescued from floods

The Government has been told it had under-estimated the scale of the flood rescue effort after new figures showed as many as 3,500 people have been rescued by the fire service in the past few days.

The rescue effort was described as the biggest in peacetime Britain, with the number of casualties now exceeding 600. Four people have already died in the flooding, which has forced hundreds of people in Yorkshire and the Midlands from their homes.

Official data revealed that the fire service received more than 7,300 calls to flood-related incidents on Monday and Tuesday in England and Wales mainly in Humberside, Yorkshire, Shropshire, Nottinghamshire and Gloucestershire.

Heat wave and floods claim many lives in Europe

ATHENS: Dozens of people across southern Europe perished in a blistering heat wave while storms whipped the north of the continent and floods claimed four lives in Britain in recent days.

Recent floods in Pakistan and Britain and heat waves in southern Europe show the world must be better prepared to cope with climate change, said Salvano Briceno, director of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. “Heavy rainfalls in Pakistan, India and northern England and heat waves in Greece, Italy and Romania are indications of global warming.” In Greece authorities said on Wednesday that the longest heat wave in the country’s history had killed five people, but the media says that death toll is at least 10 people. “The weather conditions have been unprecedented, we have never had a heat wave lasting for eight straight days,” Development Ministry General Secretary Nikos Stefanou told private Flash Radio.

Belu regency remains shut down by floods

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Schools and offices in 16 flood-affected villages in Belu regency remained closed for a second day Wednesday, though floodwaters have begun to subside.

West Malaka district head Remigius Asa said by phone the floodwaters had begun to recede after the heavy rains that had been pounding the area stopped.

However, many affected residents have chosen to remain in temporary camps rather than return to their homes.

"The water started to recede Tuesday night. Those people who camped out on their roofs ... have started to clean the mud from their houses. The water level in several villages is still between 30 and 50 centimeters," said Remigius.

Solomon Islanders flee floods

HEAVY flooding has forced more than 3000 people to flee to higher ground in the northeast of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.
Some 80 villages have been affected after torrential rains caused two rivers to break their banks, with waters rising up to 10m in some places, the National Disaster Management Office said.

An assessment team from the office, along with health and agriculture officers and Red Cross officials, has been sent to the area.

No casualties have been reported but local elders have called for authorities to arrange for relief supplies to be sent after flood waters destroyed food gardens.

Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank has announced funding of $US4.95 million ($5.9 million) for rehabilitation work in the Solomons' Western Province following the 8.1 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami that struck on April 2.

The disaster killed 52 people, destroyed or damaged about 6000 houses along with schools and other public buildings and left an estimated 5000 people homeless.

Scientists predict more regular monsoon summers

Monsoon summers, with short but heavy downpours, are predicted by scientists to become a feature of British weather, bringing floods that could cause around one billion pounds worth of extra damage a year.

The flash flooding that has affected Sheffield and Hull in particular this week, as well as a large swathe of land across the north of England and the Midlands, is a growing phenomenon and follows floods in Carlisle in 2005 and Boscastle in 2004.

The Environment Agency expects the risks of flooding to rise significantly during this century.

Climate change is being blamed, as well as poor maintenance of the flood prevention system and dabbling in nature, such as concreting over the countryside which acts as a natural drainage system and trying to re-route rivers.

What I find particularly interesting is you have such a disparity in natural or man-made disasters going on right next door to each other. In Texas they cannot take one more drop of rain, and California, two states away, is burning up. Georgia and Florida have had horrendous wildfires, and yet, we're in hurrican season, and we can't WISH a hurricane into being to drench those two states.

It's all just part of the end times scenario. Not much to get wigged about, it is all happening by reason and by season. Just keep harvesting. You never know if YOU are the one to bring that last gentile to Christ so we can go home.
