SILVERTON, Ore. — Plenty of politicians reinvent themselves, but few do it quite like Mayor-elect Stu Rasmussen.

Rasmussen has been a fixture in Silverton politics for more than 20 years, and had twice before been mayor of the small city 45 miles south of Portland. Those terms, however, were before his breast implants and before the once-discreet crossdresser started wearing dresses and 3-inch heels in public.

Silverton has made Rasmussen the country's first openly transgender mayor, according to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a group that works to help openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people win elected office.

Yeah, they interviewed him on one of our Portland news stations the other night. Silverton has always been a bit... strange, well, stranger than some places. It's like a mini Eugene, which is the hippie capitol of Oregon. My 14 year old son freaked when they showed this guy/gal on the news "Is that a guy????" he said.

I agree with Tigerwoman, we are the granola bowl state. This place is perfect for gays & lesbians and the others, tree-huggers, earth worshippers, sustainability devotees, and those who adhere to the global warming/greenhouse effect. It's a mother earth worshippers haven. The main thing is though, this kind of behavoir is mainly living in the I-5 corridor where most of the population is. The rest of the state is overwhelmingly red.

Oregon is a lovely....beautiful state! I've also heard that about the concentration of liberalist populations with the rest of the state being "normal"...if there is such a thing these days.
