Parents Rush to Abandon Teens as Change Looms for Nebraska Safe-Haven Law

LINCOLN, Neb. — The mother was running out of more than patience when she abandoned her 18-year-old daughter at a hospital over the weekend under Nebraska's safe-haven law.

She was also running out of time: She knew that state lawmakers would soon meet in a special session to amend the ill-fated law so that it applies to newborns only.

"Where am I going to get help if they change the law?" said the mother, who lives in Lincoln and asked to not be identified by name to protect her adopted child.

To the state's surprise and embarrassment, more than half of the 31 children legally abandoned under the safe-haven law since it took effect in mid-July have been teenagers.

...

The safe-haven law was intended to save "Dumpster babies" by allowing desperate young mothers to abandon their newborns at a hospital without fear of prosecution. But lawmakers could not agree on an age limit, and the law as passed uses only the word "child."

All states have safe-haven laws, but in every state but Nebraska, the law applies to infants only.

Authier said her group and others had warned senators after the law passed early this year that there could be problems, but the lawmakers did not believe it.

What will Nebrasaka folks do when they can only abandon an infant ?

It's getting crazier and crazier out there ... .
I can't fathom abandoning an infant or a child.

At least they seem to have asked for an opinion. That's more than can be said for the Federal Reserve.:twitch

:tsk Those poor teens. What a horrible thing to have your parents abandon you like that. Just what do you tell a child when you abandon them? "Sorry, your too much of a burden. Hope you have a good life?"

At least infants won't remember being abandoned.

...the love of many will grow cold. Indeed!

More and more I grow to hate this world.

Talk about love growing cold. How do you raise a child for years and then abandon that son or daughter who is now a teenager? This breaks my heart. I don't understand how a parent of a teen can just give up and walk away. How do you sleep at night after doing something like that?

I've read that some kids didn't even know they were being abandoned. Parents take them to hospital without a word, and kids are left wondering what happened.

Completely heart breaking.

The raising part may not have happened (aka: child has been left to raise himself) and the child is running wild! You reap what you sow. Abandonment is just a continuation of what's been going on their whole lives.

[I work with youth and see this often in our community ... I have some parents I would love to take to the woodshed]

I'm afraid some of these teens are teens that stay in trouble with the law and the parents just can't handle them any more. And with criminal records, it must be very hard to place them. Anyone know if this might be the case in with some?
