Transgressions, Iniquity, and Sin

In Psalm 51 is David's confession to God, asking for forgiveness.

1"Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the mulitude of thy tender mercies blot out my trangressions." 2 "Wash me thoroughtly from mine iniqity, and cleanse me from my sin."

I have read many commentaries trying to find out the difference between "transgressions, iniquity, and sin.

This is what seems to be the difference, according to the commentaries that I have read:
Trangression: is rebellion, disobedience, vilation of God's will or the law of God.
Iniquity:Self-willed, Stubborness to do wickness, or gross immorality.
Sin: To miss the mark, to fall short of the mark, Romans 3:23 "For all have sin and come short of the glory of God.

'Iniquity' is the potential for disobedience. Its the 'I will'...

Transgression is usually applied to specific 'Law breaking' whereas 'Sin' is a more generic 'Mark missing'. Both are a result of Iniquity potential being put into action.

hi, during davids time he was living under the old covenant and forgiveness off sin was as david done above confession before god the iniquity sounds like actions done and sin cleansing was the old ritual off shedding off blood i think that was a lamb at the alter in the temple and repentance agreeing with god too turn away from offending him in the decisions made that were not pleasing in the sight off god. for without shedding off blood there was no forgiveness off sins plus the old covenant was a foreshadow off the new covenant that was too come which happenned when the lord jesus christ died on the cross and cried IT IS FINISHED. and god laid the sins off the world upon the lord jesus christ our perfect lamb ,the lamb off god who takes away the sins off the whole world he paid the price once and for all time and now our part is too accept that gift off salvation by believing and trusting in the lord jesus christ who gives us new life through the indwelling off the holy spirit.plus david also knew through the holy spirit that there was going too be a new covenant made ,even abraham was privledged by god to know a new covenant was going to come jesus himself said too the jews in his time that abraham knew off his arrival on the earth and jesus says abraham rejoiced knowing this imfomation. hope this is helpful god bless
