WASHINGTON — The Bush administration has told top lawmakers it does not plan to use at least half of the $700 billion bailout fund that Congress approved this fall to aid the financial industry, congressional officials said Monday.

These officials said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson passed the word over the weekend that he intends to leave $350 billion untouched when the administration leaves office on Jan. 20. That would mean the incoming Obama administration would decide whether and how the funds should be spent.

The disclosure comes at a time when Democrats are working to pass emergency legislation to spend $25 billion of the bailout money to provide loans to the battered auto industry.

These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose the developments.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto neither confirmed nor disputed their account, adding that any decision about the use of the remaining $350 billion were up to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

"He said he's working to continue to design and develop programs, and when it's the right time to use them Treasury will announce it. And if it then makes sense to go to Congress, he'll recommend we request to drawdown the second $350 billion," Fratto said.

No wonder Obama supported the bailout! I wonder what he's gonna do with all the money...

This is said so much anymore, it doesn't even raise eyebrows now. How can we trust anything we read if there are no "real" sources, just loose lips or purposeful "leaks" that can't be backed up? :scratch

Well at least the Republicans can't be blamed for the whole bailout when the money is spent and it doesn't really make things better I guess.

Eh-most of the first 1/2 of the bailout money was being given to shareholders and bonuses to executives anyways.

Either way-it's going to get ugly from now until the end of the year. Once Obama gets in, it's only going to get nastier.

What gets me...is this had to be "pushed" through, overnight after the first vote failed...we were told "we have to do this or we face a depression greater than the Great Depression", now everyone is fiddling their thumbs over how to actually spend the money, and what's been spent is done by an unelected official with no accountability-which was PROMISED in the second vote. :doh Things must not be so bad if they don't have to dole the money out for mos yet. :doh :doh

Hey...we need to call all our Reps and tell them to buy gold with the money until they are ready to spend it, at least get some gain or intrest on the $$. :hehee

Me thinks our taxpayers will see (eventually...maybe) a lion's share of this money funneled overseas by Obammy.

He owes a lot of 'foreign' investors for his new office.

I'll NEVER accept him as my president.

I'm not accepting him either. He certainly doesn't represent any of my beliefs. I plan to ignore him as much as possible.

Today, on the news I heard him say "MY White House" and those three words
said more than I could ever explain. We're a government of the people and it's not HIS house, he is supposed to be serving us.

I'm deeply disappointed that John McCain has thrown in the towel and seemingly jumped on the bandwagon. It's already ugly in my opinion and I can't help but wonder how long God can withhold judgment.
