WASHINGTON (AP) -- Detroit's Big Three auto makers are begging Congress for a $25 billion government rescue, while the legislation clings to life support on Capitol Hill and top lawmakers and the White House suffer from bailout fatigue.
Democratic congressional leaders want to tap the $700 billion Wall Street rescue package for new loans to U.S. auto manufacturers and suppliers, but the White House and GOP lawmakers say the beleaguered industry shouldn't get any new funds.
President George W. Bush and GOP lawmakers instead propose diverting $25 billion in loans approved by Congress in September -- designed to help auto manufacturers retool their factories so they can make more fuel-efficient vehicles -- to cover the firms' immediate financial woes...........

Write to your representative in Congress...not that it will do much good.

I agree that they shouldn't be bailed out...all it's going to do is delay them from going through bankruptcy. People still aren't going to afford to buy new cars anyway, so it's going to happen. Until people can afford to start spending money again, it won't do any good.
I've seen now how it's affecting where I work...as of yesterday they started letting people go out of the office area. In my department (Quality) we just lost a person that's been here for 30 years! They let a total of 7 people go yesterday and they say there will be more. Most of our jobs are Aerospace, Automotive and Heavy duty truck...I do all the qualifications for new parts in Auto and Truck. We haven't gotten ANY orders for new parts in over 4 weeks, and normally we have several every week. They're not ordering new parts because they don't even know if they'll be business much longer, so that's trickling down to us. It's so sad and very nerve-racking!!! :fear
Whatever happens, we need to pray for all the people that will be effected by this. By the way, I live in Michigan...I've lived here all my life (55 yrs) and I've never seen it so bad.
