Last-minute Bush abortion ruling causes furor

International Herald Tribune

WASHINGTON: A last-minute Bush administration plan to grant sweeping new protections to health care providers who oppose abortion and other procedures on religious or moral grounds has provoked a torrent of objections, including a strenuous protest from the government agency that enforces job-discrimination laws.

The proposed rule would prohibit recipients of federal money from discriminating against doctors, nurses and other health care workers who refuse to perform or to assist in the performance of abortions or sterilization procedures because of their "religious beliefs or moral convictions."

It would also prevent hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and drugstores from requiring employees with religious or moral objections to "assist in the performance of any part of a health service program or research activity" financed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

But three officials from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, including its legal counsel, whom President George W. Bush appointed, said the proposal would overturn 40 years of civil rights law prohibiting job discrimination based on religion.

Can I venture to guess it's the same people who whine about discrimination who are against this obvious anti-discrimination rule? Why is it that discrimination is so "evil" unless it's against Christians then it's suddenly okay and encouraged?

But three officials from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, including its legal counsel, whom President George W. Bush appointed, said the proposal would overturn 40 years of civil rights law prohibiting job discrimination based on religion.

Total black is white, up is down, doublespeak going on there.

We had a new poster put up in our pharmacy (Kaiser and HMO) a couple mos ago, it states that if the pharmacist or clerk have a religious objection to giving out medicines that conflict with their religious beliefs, like the morning after pill and others..that another employee in the pharmacy will help them, if one is not available that does not object, they will call their prescription to a nearby pharmacy to pick it up. Also, if the pharmacy does not carry medications based on religious grounds, the pharmacist will call their prescription to a nearby pharmacy where they can fill it.

Way to go Mr. President! It's a shame this won't survive the new administration.

Yeah, Obama will overturn it when he overturns those other 200 Bush executive orders. Then he'll sign FOCA.
