My daughter is in 6th grade, and has been attending a public grade school. They have taught the bare minimum about phonics - only the sounds of consonants & vowels. (can you believe that??? :panic) I've tried to do some teaching on this subject on my own ( you know, giving her rules like "i before e except after c" ), but I need something more focused.
What curriculum would any of you recommend? Something I could get online would be great. Thanks in advance. :hat

I recommend the phonics charts from Abeka Books. I just found a set on Ebay starting at $6. Auction # 260324180775. I taught in a Christian school
and used these charts every day with my kids. It opened my eyes to the world of phonics. Once you get them you need to go over them daily. They really help in word attack skills if you memorize and learn the rules.

I used the Romalda Spalding phonics cards with my kids. They don't just teach 'b" and the two sounds for 'i'. They also show the different combination sounds - such as the six ways to pronounce -ough. They do have cards for -ie and -ei too.
I used them when my kids were younger, however, the person who recommended them to me learned about them from a seminar on teaching remedial reading and spelling to 6th graders.

(btw, as I type this, my 13 year old is repeating "oy" - one of her favorite sounds from the cards)
Another resource that teaches spelling rules is Dr. Fry's spelling book.

Many thanks to you both, especially for the kindness of posting the ebay auction number and the Spalding link! I'll look into all your suggestions. :thumb

Actually Hooked on Phonics is good for that age. They also have SRA's that really help with reading skills.
