I love allusions and models in the Bible. It amazes me to see the parallels and prophetic indicators between the sacrificing of Isaac and the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the Cross. It excites me to realize that when the Holy Spirit tells us in Genesis 8 that the ark came to rest in the seventh month on the seventeenth day of the month, that He was telling us that it happened on the "anniversary in advance" of Christ emerging from the tomb on Firstfruits.

In that vein, here are some of the better known models, allusions, and types of the rapture (in some form) that are in the Old Testament. If you know of others, feel free to share them:

Enoch and The Flood
- Genesis 5-8
- The flood can obviously be viewed as a "type" of judgement (i.e. the Tribulation)
- There were three "groups" of people that were facing the flood:

- Those that perished in the flood
- Those that were miraculously preserved through the flood

- Noah and his family
- Allusion to the 144,000 Jews that are miraculously preserved through the tribulation?
- Those that were removed prior to the flood

- Enoch
- Allusion to the Church (or the Body of Christ?)
- Note that Enoch was "pre-flood" as opposed to "mid-flood" or "post-flood" :lol2

Isaac's "Absence" after his Offering
- Genesis 22:19-24:62
- Note that after the offering, in Genesis 22:19 we are told that "Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba". Where is Isaac??? Obviously he was with them, but it is interesting to note that Isaac seems to have been "edited out" of the narrative. He isn't mentioned again until he is united with his bride!
- We already know that Isaac is a model of Christ in that he was "offered" by his father. So is this a continuation of the allusion? In the same way that Christ returned to heaven after His offering...and will return when it is time to be united with His bride?

Ruth and the Threshing Floor
- Ruth 3:7-9
- It is commonly recognized that the historical story of Ruth and Boaz are a model for Christ and His gentile bride.
- Further, a threshing floor is often an allusion or model for judgement or tribulation.
- Note where Ruth (the gentile bride) is during the threshing floor...she is at the feet of Boaz just as we will be at the feet of Christ during the Tribulation!

Daniel's Absence during the Fiery Furnace
- Daniel 3
- We know that Nebuchadnezzar is a model of the Anti-Christ. We can also see the fiery furnace as a model for tribulation and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego as a model for the 144,000 that are preserved through the Tribulation.
- Where was Daniel? There are a few possibilities:

- Maybe he bowed down to the statue as commanded (yeah, right!)
- Maybe he didn't bow down, but the accusers of the other three didn't accuse Daniel (also not likely)
- That means that most likely he wasn't around. Maybe he was away on some kind of "state matter" and this fact was used as an opportunity to accuse the others.
- In any case, for the purposes of the model...is it possible that Daniel is a model of the Church (the Body of Christ) and is therefore not present during the "Tribulation?"

Other Possible Allusions:
- Isaiah 26:19-21
- Zepheniah 2:3
- Psalm 27:5

Just some things to think about ;)

You are on to something, it is so so so cool to see these things. I have heard these stories but never put them side by side like you have and others have like Joel,
So I would hope these realizations are part of the "sealed until the time of the end"

Isaac's "Absence" after his Offering
- Genesis 22:19-24:62
- Note that after the offering, in Genesis 22:19 we are told that "Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba". Where is Isaac??? Some other things interesting about this:

Isaac's father sent his nameless servent to seek a bride for his son.
Isaac goes out at eventide and meets his bride then takes her back to his mothers tent.

I've heard that parts of Song of Solomon allude to the rapture of the Church. For instance, Song of Solomon 2:10-13. Of particular note is where it says, "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone." Some say that since "the early rains" are in the fall, and "the latter rains" are in the spring, then the phrase "the rain is over and gone" might be referring to summer. :)

Also, they mention Song of Solomon 6:10-13, which they say refers to the time after we are "snatched away", and they are saying "return, return, that we may look upon thee..." :idunno (Some commentaries interject "'return, return, that we may look upon thee.' For, what is so special about you?")

Interesting to think about!

You've mentioned a few of these already, but here is a list that I've compiled:

Noah and the Flood

Enoch was raptured before the flood judgment (Genesis 5:24, Hebrews 11:5)
Parallel = The church will be raptured before the Tribulation judgments (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17)

Noah & family were saved through the flood (Genesis 7:23)
Parallel = The Jewish remnant will be saved through the Great Tribulation (Revelation 12:6, 13-15)

Noah & family went into the ark 7 days before the destruction of the unrighteous (Genesis 7:10)
Parallel = The destruction of unbelievers will be at the end of the Tribulation week of 7 years (Revelation 19:17-21, Matthew 25:41-46)

The earth was changed by the flood (Genesis 7:11)
Parallel = The earth will be renewed after being changed in the Tribulation (Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 40:4-5, Ezekiel 38:20, Revelation 6:14)

Noah was 600 years old at the time of the flood (Genesis 7:6)
Parallel = The earth will be about 6,000 years old at the time of the Tribulation.

The days of man were cut off after 120 years (Genesis 6:3)
Parallel = The days of man's work will end after about 120 jubilees or 6,000 years.

Rain in the flood judgment lasted 40 days and nights (Genesis 7:12)
Parallel = The length of a pregnancy is 40 weeks. The Tribulation, likened to a women in labor will occur about 40 jubilees or about 2000 years after Christ's First Coming (Psalm 48:6, Isaiah 21:3 Jeremiah 30:6 & 48:41 & 49:22-24. Micah 4:9-10, Matthew 24:8, Mark 13:8, Romans 8:22, 1 Thessalonians 5:3)

Abraham prays for Lot to escape destruction (Genesis 18:16-33, Genesis 19:29)
Parallel = We are to pray to be counted worthy to escape the Tribulation (Luke 21:36)

Lot escapes to a city (Genesis 19:20-22)
Parallel = The church will escape the Tribulation and go to the New Jerusalem or the Father’s house (John 14:1-3)

Lot's wife didn't want to give up her life, so she looked back and lost her life (Genesis 19:26)
Parallel = Many people will be destroyed during the Tribulation because they don't want to give their life to Christ (Luke 17:30-33)

Sodom & Gomorrah was destroyed by fire & brimstone (Genesis 19:23)
Parallel = Unbelievers and all evil will ultimately be thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone (Revelation 19:20, Revelation 20:10, Revelation 21:8)

The Destruction of Jericho

Joshua in Hebrew is Yeshua

Parallel = Day's of man's work will be about 6,000 years.

The seventh day, the men marched around the city seven times (Joshua 6:4)
Parallel = There will be a 7 year Tribulation at the dawn of the 7th Millennium (Daniel 9:27, Revelation 11:2-3, Revelation 12:6&14, Revelation 13:5)

At the last trumpet there was a great shout and the people went up (Joshua 6:5, 20)

Parallel = Babylon will be destroyed by fire near the end of the Tribulation (Revelation 18:17-18)

Elijah and Elisha

Elijah was taken to heaven by the Lord alive (2 Kings 2:11)
Parallel = Those in the church that are alive at the time of the rapture will not see death (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17)

Elisha asked for a double portion of the spirit that was on Elijah (2 Kings 2:9)

Elisha took up the mantle of Elijah (2 Kings 2:13)
Parallel = The 144,000 servants and the 2 witnesses will "take up" the job of spreading the gospel after the church is raptured (Isaiah 61:1-6, Revelation 7:1-8, Revelation 11:2-7)

Parallel = The 2 witnesses will prophesy for 42 months and they have the power to devour their enemies (Revelation 11:2-7)

The Rapture and the Great Middle East War - Will they occur at the same time?

* The "Great Middle East War" study can be found here: http://www.rr-bb.com/showthread.php?t=40429

Elijah was taken to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11)
Parallel = God will make Israel's enemies like “chaff before the whirlwind” in the war (Isaiah 17:13, Psalms 83:13, Zephaniah 2:1, Amos 1:14, Isaiah 26:18, Jeremiah 23:19)

Gideon went up against Israel's neighbors the Midianites and the Lord delivered them; even being outnumbered (Judges 7)
Parallel = The Lord will deliver Israel, being outnumbered, from its neighbors in the Great Middle East War.

Gideon had his men blow a trumpet and break pitchers with torches inside when they went up against the Midianites (Judges 7:15-22)
Parallel = At the trumpet sound at the rapture, the light inside the believer will be revealed through the transformation of their earthly vessel to that of a glorified body (2 Corinthians 4:7-12, 1 Corinthians 15:52)

Sisera, and Jabin were other neighbors of Israel from Canaan that were defeated (Judges 4).
Parallel = The Psalmist pleads with God to deal with Israel’s neighbors in the same manner that he dealt with Sisera and Jabin. (Psalms 83:9-10)

Gideon killed Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah, and Zalmunna ( Judges 7:25, Judges 8:1-21)
Parallel = The Psalmist pleads with God to deal with Israel's neighbors in the same manner Gideon dealt with Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah, and Zalmunna (Psalm 83:11)

Gideon took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of Zebah and Zalmunna's camels after he killed them (Judges 8:21)
Parallel = The vast majority of Israel's neighbors are Muslims, whose symbol is the crescent. Israel's neighbors will also be defeated in the Great Middle East War.

* Also see Psalm 108 for another possible parallel and connection of the war and the rapture.

Jacob's Trouble

Jacob's "trouble" with Laban started by him being tricked into marrying Leah instead of Rachel. The wedding lasted a week. (Genesis 29:23-28)
Parallel = The "time of Jacob's trouble" will be the final week of years in Daniel's prophecy (Daniel 9:26-27, Daniel 12:1, Jeremiah 30:7)

Jacob had to work 7 more years to earn his beloved Rachel (Genesis 29:29-30)
Parallel = God will take back Israel as His beloved wife after they go through the testing period of the 7-year Tribulaion (Hosea 3:1-5, Zechariah 13:9)

Samson and His Philistine Wife

Samson took a gentile bride (Judges 14:1-3)
Parallel = Christ took a mostly gentile bride (Romans 10:19-20, Romans 11:11)

The wedding lasted seven days (Judges 14:17)
Parallel = Christ will receive His bride (consummate the marriage) during the 7 year Tribulation (Ephesians 5:31-32, John 14:2-3)

The Wedding at Cana

The wedding was on the "third day" (John 2:1)
Parallel = The Marriage of the Lamb will be after 2,000 years or in the third millennium after Christ's 1st Coming.

Christ manifested His glory through His first miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding (John 2:11)
Parallel = The bride of Christ will be glorified with Him at His 2nd Coming at their wedding (1 John 3:1-3, Philippians 3:20-21)

After the wedding (which traditionally lasted 7 days), Jesus drove out the money changers to cleanse the temple (John 2:13-17)
Parallel = After the 7 year Tribulation, Jesus will destroy His enemies (Revelation 19:17-21, Matthew 25:31-46) and He will build the Millennial temple to replace the desecrated temple of the Tribulation (Daniel 9:27, Zechariah 6:12-13)

Abraham, Isaac, the servant and Rebekah

Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for his son Isaac. (Genesis 24:1-4)
Parallel = The Father sent the Holy Spirit to indwell the believer. The church is the bride of Christ (Acts 1:4-5, 2 Corinthians 11:1-2, Revelation 19:7-9)

The servant gave gifts to the bride he found and Rebekah invited him to her home (Genesis 24:22-24)
Parallel = When a person invites the Holy Spirit into their heart, the Holy Spirit gives them gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-10)

Rebekah went back with the servant instead of staying with her family (Genesis 24:50-59)
Parallel = The Church will be raptured with the Holy Spirit, who as the restrainer will still be in us, instead of staying with the unbelievers who will go through the Tribulation (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7)

Isaac went out to meet Rebekah and the servant coming on camels (Genesis 24:62-65)
Parallel = Jesus will meet the church in the clouds at the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17)

Isaac married Rebekah and was comforted after his mother's death (Genesis 24:67)
Parallel = Jesus betrothed the church by giving her salvation after Israel rejected Him.(Romans 11) The nation Israel died in 70AD. (Luke 21:20-24) Israel is pictured as the mother of the Messiah. (Revelation 12:1-6)

Boaz and Ruth

Parallel = Christ is the kinsmen redeemer, by His blood, for His mostly gentile bride, the church (Revelation 5:9)

Esther

Mordecai and the other Jews were persecuted by Haman (Esther 3)
Parallel = Satan has been persecuting the Jews since they’ve been in existence. It will be no different during the Tribulation. (Revelation 12:13-17)

Mordecai and the Jews mourned in sackcloth and ashes with fasting weeping and wailing (Esther 4:1-3)
Parallel = The priests will lie in sackcloth and the assembly will consecrate a fast and cry out to the Lord after the “Great Middle East War” (Joel 1:13-15)

On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and went to intercede for the Jews before the king (Esther 5:1-8)
Parallel = On the third millennium after the cross, the church, as the bride of Christ, will come out of her "dressing room" (the Bema Seat), wearing white robes (Revelation 4:4) and intercede for Israel during the Tribulation (Joel 2:15-17)

Haman was killed instead of Mordecai the Jew (Esther 7:10)
Parallel = The Jewish remnant will survive. Satan, the antichrist and the false prophet will all be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:19-20, Revelation 20:10)

There was a feast and celebration after the Jews were saved (Esther 8:17)
Parallel = The marriage supper of the Lamb will be after the Tribulation, where presumably the Jews will be a part of the guests at the feast (John 3:29, Revelation 19:9)

The Samaritan Woman

The Samaritan woman had 5 husbands and was living with a man when she met Jesus (John 4:17)
Parallel = The gentiles had, up to Jesus' time, 5 world kingdoms come and go (Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Mede & Persia, Greece), and were currently dominated by Rome.

Jesus left Judea (Jewish), stopped in Samaria (Gentile) for two days, and then went to Galilee (Jewish). (John 4)
Parallel = Jesus turned his focus to the church (which is mostly gentile) after the Jews rejected him. (Romans 11) He will turn back to the Jews after about 2,000 at the rapture of the church. (Hosea 6:1-2)

Many Samaritans believed in Jesus through the witness of the Samaritan woman, but then knew for sure He was the Son of God by hearing Jesus for themselves (John 4:39-42)
Parallel = The church is commissioned to preach the gospel (Acts 1:8), but only by the Holy Spirit will people be sure of their salvation. (Ephesians 1:11-14)

When Jesus left Samaria, he was welcomed at Galilee. But previously, Jesus was rejected in Galilee in the town of Nazareth where He grew up. (Luke 4:16-30)
Parallel = Jesus was rejected by the Jews and turned His focus on the church. When He turns His focus back on the Jews they will accept Him as Messiah (Zechariah 12:10-114)

The first thing Jesus did in Galilee was heal a sick boy of a nobleman. The fever left the boy at the 7th hour (John 4:46-54)
Parallel = After 7 years of the "fiery trial" of the Tribulation the Jewish remnant will be saved and healed (Zechariah 13:8-9, Romans 11, Hosea 6:1-2)

After Jesus healed the fever of the nobleman's boy, He went to Jerusalem for a feast (John 5:1)
Parallel = When Jesus comes back after the Tribulation there will be a feast at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9)

The Transfiguration

After 6 days, Jesus took some of His disciples up to a mountain, where they saw Him in His glory. (Matthew 17:1-2)
Parallel = After 6,000 years the church will be raptured up to meet Christ in the clouds where they will see Him in His glory (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17, Philippians 3:20-21)

Moses and Elijah appeared on the scene (Matthew 17:3)
Parallel = At the beginning of the Tribulation, 2 witnesses appear on the scene (Revelation 11)

The Two Witnesses - Will they be Moses and Elijah?

Elijah was given the power to shut up heaven so that no rain fell and he used fire against his enemies (I Kings 17-18, 2 Kings 1)
Parallel = The 2 witnesses will be given power to shut up heaven so that no rain falls and will use fire against their enemies (Revelation 11:5-6)

Moses was given the power to turn water to blood and strike the earth with plagues (Exodus 7-11)
Parallel = The 2 witnesses will be given power to turn the waters to blood and strike the earth with plagues (Revelation 11:6)

Jesus tells us that Elijah is yet coming, even though John the Baptist had already come (Matthew 17:11-13)
Parallel = It is prophesied that Elijah will come in the last days before the "great and dreadful day of the Lord" (Malachi 4:5-6)

For some reason there was a dispute between Michael the archangel and the devil over Moses' body (Jude 1:9). Elijah was taken alive to heaven (2 Kings 2:11)
Parallel = The 2 witnesses are anointed, or chosen by God for service (Zechariah 4:14)

Joseph and His Brothers

Joseph had a dream that the sun, moon and eleven stars would bow down to him (Genesis 37:9). Joseph ruled over Egypt just under Pharaoh (Genesis 41:37-57).
Parallel = John, in Revelation, had a vision of a woman clothed with sun, with the moon under her feet and twelve stars on her head giving birth to the male Child, who would rule all nations with a rod of iron (Revelation 12:1-6) at the right hand of God (Matthew 26:64)

Parallel = Jesus was crucified along side two other men (Matthew 27:38, Mark 15:27, Luke 23:32-33, John 19:18) and gave up His body (the bread) and poured out His blood (wine) on the cross. (Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:19-20)

The two prisoners had dreams that Joseph interpreted. One prisoner was released and the other was hung on a tree (Genesis 40)
Parallel = Barnabas was released (Matthew 27:15-26, Mark 15:6-15, Luke 31:13-25, John 31:39-40) and Jesus hung on a tree (Acts 5:30, Acts 10:39, Galatians 3:13)

When Joseph revealed himself to his brothers they were "dismayed in his presence" (Genesis 45:3)
Parallel = When Jesus reveals Himself at His 2nd Coming, the Jews will look on Him and mourn (Zechariah 12)

The Fiery Trial

Nebuchadnezzar made an image, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide. The people were to bow down to worship the image when six specific musical instruments were played (Daniel 3:1-7 - * Note: Some Bible translations group the musical instruments together and thus list less than six)
Parallel = The false prophet will require everyone to worship the image of the antichrist, whose number is 666 (Revelation 13:14-18)

Nebuchadnezzar dictated that anyone that didn't worship the image would be killed (Daniel 3:6)

Parallel = The birds of the air will feast at the great supper of God on His enemies (Revelation 50:17-18)

David was anointed and declared to be king before he conquered Goliath and became king later (1 Samuel 16:1-13, 2 Samuel 2:1-7)
Parallel = Jesus was declared to be king at the triumphal entry on a donkey at His 1st Coming (Matthew 21:1-11) Jesus will rule as king on Earth after He strikes His enemies at His 2nd Coming (Revelation 19:15-16)

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Parallel = It takes wisdom and understanding to calculate and solve the number of the beast (Revelation 13:18)

The queen of Sheba gave Solomon 120 talents of gold (1 Kings 10:10, 2 Chronicles 9:9)

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone." Some say that since "the early rains" are in the fall, and "the latter rains" are in the spring, then the phrase "the rains are over and gone" might be referring to summer. :)

Also, they mention Song of Solomon 6:10-13, which they say refers to the time after we are "snatched away", and they are saying "return, return, that we may look upon thee..." :idunno Interesting to think about!

Hmmm...I hadn't heard those ones before. Thanks!
