I guess it was started by a guy named Herbert W. Armstrong and is affiliated with The Philadelphia Church of God.

RUN to the nearest exit.

Okay...so I guess that means it is not a good thing?

My family was involved in this cult while I grew up. Please run as fast as you can. It ruined my walk with God for the first 45 years of my life. Truly I could write a book but don't feel up to it.

The Church of God that is based out of Cleveland, Tennessee is the most common. It is not the cult-like church you are thinking of. That is the Worldwide Church of God based out of Glendora, California. They are two completely different organizations.

One of my issues regarding "tongues" and the prayer language is in Matthew 6:5,

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9"This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

If tongues are truly a prayer language directly to the lord, why did Jesus specifically tell us how to pray and not just say open your mouths and let the Holy Spirit come out as you move your lips?

My wife and I are planning on leaving our Church of 5 years and are looking into Church of God. I am very impressed with their College in Cleveland, TN (Lee University). I saw a Church of God near where I live. It is very much like the Assembly of God Church we attended in Louisiana. I like their teaching. Does anyone attend a Church of God? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you read their doctrine? I'd start there. If it doesn't line up....:thinking
