I have read the entire series at leat three times and watched the movies several times and I have never heard mention of reincarnation. Which group of entities enjoyed this mode of eternal life? You dont get 'reincarnated' when you die in the game. Supposedly you 'retreat' to a safe place.

Ah... you are talking abut the Game. I have never played it. It sounds interesting but I don't have that kind of discretionary time.

Actually, some people are reincarnated in the books, so to speak. Remember Glorfindel in the books? He was the real person who met Aragorn and the Hobbits when Frodo was injured by the Witch King's poisoned blade on Weathertop (not Arwen, like in the movies). Glorfindel is a reincarnated elf. However, the way in which Tolkien wrote the afterlife in the realm of Middle-Earth is a bit different, so reincarnated may not be the appropriate word. In our terms, Glorfindel died and then was given a second chance at life. That isn't quite how it works in Middle-Earth. It gets very complicated, and this is truly where Tolkien is writing fantasy. He didn't believe in reincarnation or the afterlife of Middle-Earth, but he wrote a fascinating story about it. Whereas I have argued that Tolkien wrote a Christian tale, I admit that he was also writing an epic, history-esque fantasy tale. A "Might have been" tale in some areas, if you will.

Where do you get the idea that Glorfindel was reincarnated? Is this because they had come from the western isles to the lands of Middle Earth? (in The Silmarillion) The elves of the western isles were not elves that had died they were elves that had paused at the threshold to heaven so to speak and camped out on the door step.

Reincarnation still isn't the right word. Glorfindel took on a Balrog one on one, and, as is always the case it seems, both were defeated. He was given a second chance at life as Glorfindel. In this way, it isn't reincarnation as such. But to my knowledge, Glorfindel died or at least left Middle-Earth (or whatever the place was called at the time) and went to the Heaven or Heaven's wiating room equivalent and then returned to Middle Earth.

Hey! Just wondering a many of you are currently playing the game. I've had the game since the open beta, but I'm only at level 20 because I don't play too much. I enjoy doing it this way though, so it isn't overwhelming or becomes an issue.

I am definitely playing the game. My main character just hit 42 the other night, and I am so proud :) I have been soaring past kinship members and friends. Usually, I am the guy who gets left in the dust. Once I max this character out, I may go back and work on 17 Man Burglar (main is a Dwarf Guardian) and/or my 15 Man Hunter, perhaps my 7 Hobbit Minstrel. Fun fun game.

Ya, I agree, it is very fun. I have an elf hunter, but I've decided to not start another character until he gets "up there".
