For the past couple of months I've been working with my local City Mission here in England.
We are ministering to "street people"; mostly people on drugs, alcoholics, the homeless and "Big Issue" sellers ("The Big Issue" is a British publication that drug users and the homeless can sell on the streets for profit to try and make an honest living).
God has really given me a love for these people and I look forward to meeting them each week as we go round the city giving them hot food and drinks. Everyone's story is different, many have damaged childhoods, but all need the Gospel.
Each week I share the Gospel and often offer to pray with those on the street. It is amazing that no-one has refused my offer of prayer! In fact, the guy who runs our City Mission says that, in the 5 years he's been doing this, he's never know a street person refuse to be prayed for.
I must admit I was very hesitant about joining this work. In fact I put it off for about year, partly for medical reasons, but also because I was a little bit afraid of doing it!
But often when I used to read the Bible, I kept seeing where God spoke of his love for the poor, the marginalised and the rejected. Also, Matthew Chapter 25 convicted my heart when I read about the basis of judgment for the sheep and the goats; "what you did for the least of these, you did for me."
Having done door-to-door evangelism work and other witnessing at work and with other "respectable people", give me work on the streets any time!
We have a fortnightly prayer meeting and it is the most powerful prayer meeting I have EVER attended. God is present in an amazing way and the ladies who do most of the prayer work are fantastic.
If you are looking to serve the Lord either as a "prayer" or in evangelism in a very practical way, I can thoroughly recommend City Mission ministry on the streets!
