Since Catholicism doesn't teach that works get you to heaven or that you can buy your way in, it doesn't fit your definition.

Well I guess that the people I know that are catholic do not know wht their church teaches. I will talk to them about that; but I am fairly certain that is what I have been told by numerous practicing catholics and ex catholics.

This was given to me from a practicing catholic:

Must you, as a Catholic, do or believe the following in order to go to Heaven? Yes No
1 Confess your sins to a Roman Catholic priest?
2 "Receive" all appropriate Roman Catholic sacraments?
3 Believe that Grace comes only via Rome's sacraments, and only through Mary? (WHAT?)
4 Buy or earn as many indulgences as possible so as to avoid Purgatory?
( remember my words about buying your way into heaven?)
5 Believe that Grace can only be distributed to you by Mary?
6 Attend the Roman Catholic Mass on all Sundays and holy days?
7 Obey all of Rome's rules (i.e., precepts of the Church)?
8 Be a member of the Roman Catholic Church?
9 Submit yourself to Pope John Paul II?

Sounds like a cult to me.

None of the above will get me into heaven, and whoever told you that really needs to learn what Catholicism teaches. :doh

Thank you for starting this thread. :nod My Husband's side of the family is JW and we are going to a family reunion in a week. It will be nice this time to not only know what I believe but know what they do as well and how to talk to them. :thumbup

You know I just realized that this was from a Roman Catholic. Isn't there a difference?

Sacraments are works and necessary for salvation. Therefore, your contention is not consonant.

I agree.
It's always interesting to see it denied.

You all really have no understand of Catholicism and that's okay with me. It's your problem and not mine.

However the position of the board owner is that Catholicism is not a cult and is a Christian faith and that's all that matters, so if you have a problem with that I suggest you take it up with Todd.

Catholicism, in the Encyclopedia Britannica, is cited as a cult.

Not saying all catholics believe this way, but to my understanding, which isnt great on catholicism, they believe they are the only way, that if you are not catholic, then you cant get to heaven. If the Catholic church has changed this view, then, perhaps, they cant be considered a cult.

Is this how they, the vatican, see it now??? Not individually, the congregations usually dont agree 100% with any denomination for whatever reason they have. I am sure they used to believe that if you werent a member of a catholic church somewhere, then you were not gonna make it. What about in these days?
