Unsafe at Any Speed
The downside of China's manufacturing boom: deadly goods wreaking havoc at home and abroad. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19650857/site/newsweek/)

There's seafood laced with additives that lower men's sperm counts, soy sauce bulked up with arsenic-tainted human hair swept up from the barbershop floor and hormone-infused fast food that prompts 6-year-old boys to sprout facial hair and 7-year-old girls to grow breasts.

For the sake of the Chinese people and the rest of the world, lets hope that China throws up a few home grown Demings and Sinclairs that can lead a quality and safety revolution.

SumSam, you forgot to toss in the Chinese made Colgate toothpaste, as the latest product to be pulled off our U.S. market, due to the deadly (I believe murcury additive...) added to the toothpaste.

Therefore--JMHO, is that all their screw-ups in these products could very well be a deliberate part to kill us Americans. Do you all also suspect this same thing?:scratch

Well, I don't think greedy Chinese manufacturers are targeting just Americans. More than 100 people in Panama died after drinking Chinese made medicines that had a dangerous chemical diethylene gycol mixed in them instead of glyercin. (Diethylene gycol is used in antifreeze). Chinese drugs got pulled from several Latin American countries. The article also said that fake malaria drugs exported to Africa could have led to many Africans dying too, trusting in fake pills for a cure.

In China they recently sentenced and executed the former head of the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration, for taking bribes from drug manufacturers.

No conspiracy but just plain greed and little conscience, I fear. :(

I agree. Also, they're too new at the capitalism game to be taking the proper precautions. I don't think they have proper quality control in place and, like the official that was sentenced, too susceptable to bribes and corruption. I also think that they're careless, both in the manufacturing and the engineering areas.

It's now being reported that this Chinese official has been sentenced to death for taking the bribes. When they fire someone, they REALLY fire him! Maybe we should apply that practice to some of our dishonest bureaucrats!

Buy American yes........but just what would those consumer type American products be? Certainly not electronics, nor clothing, nor shoes, nor lots of other things that are no longer produced here.

I buy clothes and shoes made in America. My workboots are a good example...Redwing. My workjacket too...Carhartt. Can't forget TOOLS either. When I need something made right and made to last, that's when I always buy American.
And the last thing...American flags...You won't see one flying at my house that isn't made in America. That's just not right.
