I just watched an interview with the former Surgeon General on this topic. It was quite enlightening but not surprising.

If you'll read the article, you'll notice that a lot of those science issues are medical related - including, but not limited to "mental and global health issues", a "landmark report on secondhand tobacco smoke".

According to the article, the administration even discouraged him from attending the Special Olympics because of the Kennedy family's involvement with the cause.

This isn't just global warming stuff...this is the US Surgeon General...

In his testimony, Dr. Carmona said that at first he was so politically naïve that he had little idea how inappropriate the Bush administration’s actions were. He eventually consulted six previous surgeons general — Republican and Democrat — and all agreed, he said, that he faced more political interference than they did.
