I just saw this thread and also have a question about memory on an older computer.
Would reformatting the laptop restore the original memory?

That's actually a slightly different thing to what the OP was talking about. Memory isn't the same thing as storage (ie: your hard drive)
Reformatting your hard drive will wipe everything on it. So obviously you can't tell a machine to format the drive partition that it's running from. Quite sensibly, the machine will refuse to commit suicide.
If you have a restore disk that came with the machine that should be able to restore it to how it was when you got it. Which may or may not be a good thing, since a lot of laptops are pretty crippled when you first get them.
