Affordable House Price

What do you consider "affordable" for the average American family

Based on a thread I just read in here that's a hard question to answer. My mom and step dad just bought a house in central PA for around the same price as we paid for ours. About $145,000 Ours was bought about 5 years ago and theirs 2 years ago.

We got a 3Bdrm/1Bath rancher w/garage sitting on 1/3 of an acre in a middle class development.

They got 5 bdrm/2 bath rancher with a detached garage and a full finished basement w/a 2nd kitchen sitting on 11 acres.

On the thread I read some said that $800,000 would get you a run down house in a bad neighborhood in LA. (if I remember correctly)

It's all about location, location, location. And household income.

See, that is what I was thinking. In our old town affordable is a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1100 sq feet for under $100,000 and it is in the bad part of town. Here I don't think you can buy a house for under $175,000.....
