View Full Version : So Who Is This Enemy I Have Been Hearing About, Anyways?

I have been a Christian for 22 years, but I am just now really searching for truth. I dove into the Bible and any resource I can get my hands on. I cannot read enough or ask enough questions about God's plan. I am so excited to be learning about God's plan.

But recently I have been hearing a lot about the enemy. When I used to hear that word, I would think about terrorists. I don't have too many people obstructing my life enough to call them my active enemies. But since I have been corresponding more with other Christians, I have heard much tell about how the enemy is attacking individuals, families, etc. So who is this enemy?

"When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth [it] not, then cometh the wicked [one], and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side" (Matthew 13:19).

Judging by this text, we can see that the enemy is faceless, but it has a name. It is one being. It is "the wicked one." The enemy attacks the insides of us. It works against our hearts. What kind of work is the enemy doing against our hearts? The enemy steals and obscures the truth from us. It is the worst attack. It is an attack that could condemn a person to eternal damnation.

Jesus explains how the enemy works on our hearts in the parable of the tares of the field:

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
Matthew 13:24-30

In the verses that follow, Jesus explains to His disciples what He meant by this. The Son of Man (Jesus) sowed the good seed that produced good fruit. The field is the world. So Jesus is bringing truth and hope to the world. If a person accepts Jesus as his Lord and Savior, he can have eternal life in heaven.

The enemy worked when men were asleep. The enemy works at night, in the shadows, to plant itself among the good. Jesus goes on to explain that the enemy is the devil, and he is responsible for the weeds. The weeds are the "children of the wicked one" (Matthew 13:38).

So anyone working against Christians, hurting them and thereby preventing the Christians from spreading the truth by losing faith is the enemy. The Bible likens the enemy to the ravenous wolf looking for sheep. He is prowling. He wants to create more evil and prevent people from finding the truth.

The only defense is Christ. We must band together and in unity focus our eyes on Jesus. Let His Word do the fighting for us in faith. We must always be watchful and support our friends and watch after our fellow sheep. We must reach out to those who have not heard the truth and are in danger of being devoured by the enemy. Because when the harvest comes, the weeds will be separated from the good grain. The weeds will be burned and the grain will be stored (or restored).

This scripture might help.

“Ephesians: 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

Boldly proclaim the Gospel and the enemy will be apparent. Those that hate God will hate you.

Luke 6:22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

As soon as I started to proclaim the gospel message boldly, friends and relatives a like turned away from me. Amen!

Thank you, Beth.:hug This Luke 6:22, as Jesus predicted, is precisely what's happened to me too. Amen!

As as Christian your greatest enemy is "self". You could live your whole life and never actually run into Satan ... he isn't omnipresent ...

Self is one of "the wiles of the devil" as far as I can determine.

Of course there are his minions ...

But yourself ... well you are always there to mess up even if they aren't around. (speaking of myself of course)

I will pray for God to make you a stronger brother (To the Lord of the harvest) Jesus said that those wheat and tares would be growing along side of eachother, until the end of the age .... that not even the angels could uproot the tares because they might uproot the wheat by doing so

I am pretty sure He used a tare to give me the saving knowledge of Himself, I don't say that judgmentally only because he (the gentleman i think is a tare) told me about repentance and then got me to sleep with him while i was still lost, after i began to grow in the grace and knowledge of God, I quit sleeping with him and began to be very interested in the things of the Lord (regeneration) this gentlemen began to do some really messed up things to me, (cops called, nasty notes on my door, nasty phone messages, nasty emails, I quickly realized just because this guy was going to church, and had been for FIVE years, did not make him a christian, just because he was fluent in christianese, didn't mean he was saved, again I dont say this being judgmental toward him, i say this because Jesus said in John 7:24 "Dont judge according to outward appearance, but judge with a righteous judgment (IE compare what that person does and says according to scriptures) ...

The enemy is very subtle, he doesn't come in a nasty package, he tries to copycat God by giving us the desires of our heart ... only perverted and twisted. I pray for the Lord everyday to keep me from the snare of the fowler ... Psalm 91

I think it is imperative to really understand the parable of the sower, Jesus said if you don't understand that parable, you wont understand any of them.

Bless you always!
