I personally think many pictures are silly in that they are not portraying a man of Jewish decent. Although I'm hopeful that artists are only trying to convey their work to honor our Lord, I wish that they be a bit more accurate.

I forgot, I saw a small special of this at one time.

I think the first pictures came from the Catholic artists, I forget which century though. The first recorded picture had a European man with light skin, dark brown hair, and two wafts of hair dangling over his forehead. Ever since, people have copied it.

Sometimes I have to wonder though,
Did the Jewish priests have lighter skin than their contemporaries?
Did they stay out of the sun more because they didn't work in the fields?
To feature lighter skin then could be plausible to some degree if that's the case.
Or the lighter skin could signify royalty or higher status even if it wasn't his actual skin color. Maybe it has some symbolic meanings too.
I know it sounds kind of strange now a days, with people here wanting to look bronze, but in places like Asia and the times of the Greeks and Romans, white skin is/was in vogue. Asian skin has a tendency to not wrinkle as much and over pigmentate in the sun, so white skin will almost always be a sign of higher class citizens.

That's just another angle of it I never seen discussed. Picturing a man of European decent could be bias or, due to the fact the artists didn't have a Jewish person as a reference in the beginning. Many people only can draw/paint what they see. Not very many can draw from memory. But it's more likely that the Catholics who started this think they are the priestly people now, and not the Jews. So Jesus has to be white.

The bible does give a hint of what Jesus could have looked like. For instance, I forgot which king it was, that was handsome or stood taller than everyone else. The Jews expected their next to king to be like that, and Jesus wasn't. They wanted a king like before. So Jesus could have been average height, short, or even scrawny.

Could someone find that verse? It alludes me.

I believe that was King Saul. 1Sam9:2

Here's the only scripture I remember that gives some kind of description of what Jesus looked like( or, would look like): Isa 53:2: For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him.

My mother-in-law had a bible that contained a letter...I can't remember from whom and to whom. Something written to the Roman Government…, if memory serves me…, it’s been about 20 years since I saw the letter…, but it described Christ in serious detail. There was also a picture that accompanied the letter. It was an artist rendition from reading the letter. The photo looked like what we have today. So what we have must be pretty accurate.

Great drawing, Eve. I wonder what He is thinking as he gazes at the sky.....with that horrible torture device driven into his head.
