Hey all:
How many of you are aware of the current New Age phenomena The Secret. Recently my wife and I found out that our church was going to offer a 4 week course viewing the movie and the companion book:confused: Not sure I understand who thought this was a good idea.:faint :
Our dilema is that we know the associate pastor who's ministry this falls under (being taught by a church member) very well. She is a very Godly woman. We are hoping that she is just un aware of what is in The Secret. We don't know what is the best way to approach this though, but we can't keep silent.

All of these "secrets" are not new at all. In fact these same teachings were around during the First Century Church; it was called Gnostism back then, which has had many different forms in our day: Christian Science, Jehova's Witnesses, Unity, Unification, Eckenkar(mis-spelled I think);the list goes on and on. It is seeping in to mainline denominations too, introduced by individuals; but subtly. 2Peter 2 v1:....who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them...:gaah I had always wondered about that verse; and now I have seen the literal fulfillment of it in many places.:scripture
It all boils down to teachings which deny that Jesus is the only son of God, and that He died, rose again and is going to return for His redeemed with power and glory to rule the earth. They will even try to claim that Jesus Himself taught this garbage: Rev2v15:...which thing I hate...
It's funny how satan casts out satan in this case: the assumption is if you don't believe this stuff, you are ignorant and archaic. They try to display the Faith as some supersticious religion, like Roman Chatholism.

I can't believe that the church is buying into it so soon. I figured it would take a little while for the church to be "marketed" and "targeted".
That Secret stuff is nothing new -- the concepts are gnosticism wrapped up in Oprah language. I wonder if the Word of Faith stuff (which is closely related to the Secret) makes this junk sound "Christian" to the non-discerning person?
I'm sorry your having to deal with this :(

Yes, they spout the same buzzwords. I heard someone talking about it and couldn't quite figure out if she was Word of Faith or a Secret fan until she mentioned she was reading the Secret.
I was going to joke around and tell the OP if they wanted to do the christian version just pick up some WoF cult material.

Ask "The Universe" for your every wish and it will dispense "blessings" on you like some big, cosmic vending machine. :tsk
Steer clear of The Secret. It's not aligned with Scripture.

Joel Osteen talks about imagining what you want in your head and God would give it to you. That is just as bad as The Secret.
Yes, I am trusting God to provide for us a home one day, but I am not imagining it in my head. I am leaving that to God. The way I see it, He may give me a home here or in Heaven. Either way, I will trust Him.

9The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
The Secret set off my spidey sense right off the bat!

Both my wife and I felt very grieved of the spirit, even before we knew much about The Secret. The Holy Spirit truly is our perfect and wonderful councilor. Our hope is that the church will wisen up to this apostacy. If not, I am afraid we may have to face the fact that the leadership in our church is more interested in fitting in with wordly thought then standing for the Truth of Jesus Christ.
