In Rev. 2:17 it states to the overcomer..."And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it."

This is written to the church in Pergamos. Several of the other letters to churches have similar language to overcomers...i.e. "I will give power over the nations" or "Shall be clothed in white garments", etc.

Do you think that those things given are specific to those churches/people.. are they literal? In regards to the first quote about the white stone.. my Bible's margin states... Signifying approval. So, is it really a white stone with a new name? I find this so intriging... I wonder what the new name is and what it will mean to those receiving it :scratch

"overcometh"- genuine Christians

"hidden manna"-person and death of Jesus revealed in Bible

"white stone"-- everywhere things are depicted white in heaven (mostly)

This is probably the stone with a new name written down on it

(clean,holy,pure=white)

also.. I've read that the "new name" could be a special name God for each believer to call Him. (personal)

I seem to recall that my pastor said a white stone also signifies a "not guilty vote," or something like that... wasn't there voting done in those times with black and white stones?

Someone must know more about it than me...

You have heard this question asked before and the answer is.... a lot!

From naming a child after someone you hold dear in the family to calling your Savior by a name which signifies your relationship to Him (King of Kings, Comfortor, etc.), a name has great significance.

This new name on a white stone is known only to the one receiving the stone.
This suggests to me that it is, at least, at first, highly private and personal (between you and the Lord). That, in and of itself is something I could ponder about all day.:thumb

I actually read about this just the other night...During competitions (like the olympics and other local events), the winners of the race were given special white stones with a name on them. These were essentially "admission tickets" to the festivities and celebrations afterwards--in our case, our ticket to eternity!
