It's a unit study. Unit studies will usually wrap around a single subject or book in literature. If the study wraps around a subject like history, then it incorporates all the writing, spelling, science, grammar, etc. around what you are learning in history. It does the same thing when using literature as the basis of the study. When it uses literature it will usually choose one book that your child will read for about 3 or 4 weeks, and he/she will study the book and then any projects, writing assignments, and sometimes science lessons will be taken from the book.

Also, this site gives reviews from people who have used homeschool curriculum. I couldn't find one for Before Five in a Row, but I did for Five in a Row, you'll have to read through them to see if there is a review for the book your interested in.
