My oldest dd is going into the 7th grade, she is required to have a flash drive. What is the purpose of the flash drive & does in come in different sizes, what size if it comes in different sizes should we get, can it be used over & over again or will we need to buy new ones again & again? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Basic ones are dirt cheap. Here is a 1gig model from NewEgg for $7.49...

But for my money I would get one that also plays mp3's. Your DD will love it if she doesn't already have an mp3 player. Here is another 1gig model but this one also plays mp3's...

It's a "stick-it-in-your-pocket hard drive" :)
You save stuff to it just like you would save stuff to your hard drive, but then you pull it out of the USB slot and take it with you. Put it in some other computer and there you have your stuff.... Like magic....
It's not really a "hard drive" but rather "memory chips".....

My son wears his flash drive on a lanyard around his neck. He keeps his homework on it, so he can download his work at home and than at school again. It's worth the price, my husband doesn't leave home without one either. They're both computer geeks :cool

They've had out Swiss army knives with a USB Flash drive included, though I'm not sure your daughter would be interested. This one (http://flash.atpinc.com/products/view.php?product_id=1331) looks more like it.

We have a couple of them. They are the 'new' version of the old floppy disks. At least that's how it was explained to me when I purchased mine several years ago. I have one that is a ballpoint pen that comes apart, and the top goes into USB port while the user can still write with the pen. Pretty neat, huh?

Don't forget to make sure your anti virus software is up to date if you have a flash drive going back and forth from school.
As was said, it's the new version of the old floppy disk, just physically smaller while holding many, many times as much information. So it's reusable, though small enough to be easily losable, so you may end up buying more than one anyway. ;)

Flash drives are nice, I use the one I got for college to transport files from my mom's computer to mine (since they aren't hocked up to each other) They are re-usable over and over again.
Depending on what it's going to be used for (strictly word documents, or is it going to be used for Photoshop documents/music and video files or else)
If it's only ever going to be used for word documents, you don't need a really big one at all. 1gb is more than plenty for word documents
For video or music or Photoshop documents though would require one around maybe 2gb or more, depending on how much actual data you need to keep on it at a time.
Those flash drive sticks can be quite durable I've stuck mine through the washer and dryer and the silly thing still works. ^^; (I recommend if you do accidentally put electronics in water dry them immediately, if you can take them apart and use a hair dryer on low heat and keep it a ways away from the electronic so as not to fry the thing.)
Hope that helped :hug
