But you also have to factor in that if we could choose to invest the social security money ourselves, many would not invest it, and instead would not plan for their retirement.

Then they would get the scraps of the government system. Bush's plan had that provision. If people like the system they can live like paupers, he wouldn't stand in the way.

As for our kids, the politicians will not fix the problem, they will insist on moving up the age for benefits, and then be forced to raise taxes. I am with the politician that said we should scrap it. I would let them have what they have taken from me, if I could keep my taxes, from here on out, and see to my own real retirement.

Your mom's reaction is at the core of the problem, people depend on a system that is woefully inadequate to meet their needs.

Once....thanks for your reply. I believe we are on the same page about many issues.

During my mother's time there was a thing called trust. Yes, even government officials could be trusted....to a degree. My mother looked for the promise made to be a promise kept, and it was kept, albeit the politicians during campaign season would accuse the opposition of wanting to take away her livelihood.

My parents were poor and my dad was illiterate and a common laborer. The help they received in the form of social security was indeed due them. There was nothing left to save as they barely existed, and the future did not always appear to be bright.

We children helped them a lot to finally get a home, but with our own families, the funds were sometimes limited.

Social Security was a God send.

For my children, I have taught them about investing, beginning at an early age. I have two beautiful grandchildren, and I opened a mutual fund for them at birth. Hopefully they will not have to be at the mercy of the government as my parents had to be.

why do the people who know the least know it the loudest?

Well I guess I am an amateur like most people here - correct me if I am wrong.

Any legal or legalised immigrant will contribute to our taxation base and to the net worth of the nation by their work. They will use their earnings - which will have to be at least minimum wage now as they are legal - to buy or rent homes, buy food and clothes and put their children through college.

Some of them may be taking care of those baby boomers as they get old, and their children may become the doctors, nurses, lawyers and accountants they will need.

There was a similar attitude here to the Irish a while back, or so I have been told.

not sure if that was directed at me...

I agree some of those may be taking care of the elderly... but at the rate the education system is going downhill and the government being more and more "responsible" for those who cannot take care of themselves... well there will be very few doctors out of that group. I love people, I don't care where you are from and what color you are... it is not about a particular race... not Irish or otherwise, BUT about laws and accountability... I am accountable for me and my family... and whoever is drawing thier benefits right now. But no one will be there to be accountable for me and my family when we would be due our portion of social security that I have paid into since I was 15 years old.
And if you throw 12 million imigrants into the mix... the pot gets even smaller... because if you pay in you are supposed to get some out... but this thread is not about imigrants...

Perhaps if the legalisation of immigration had gone through there would be a lot more younger people contributing to the SS pot?

$2,600,000,000,000 -- That is the cost the Heritage Foundation estimates to cover the retirement benefits of 12,000,000 illegal aliens if this amnesty bill becomes law.

Giving illegals access to our Social Security benefits will be a rapid bankruptcy of our Treasury Department.

Just wait until Hillary and Bill get back in the White House. There will be absolutely no end to the social programs. Definately from the womb to the tomb.

Dont forget to thank the "country club Republicans" when that happens.

sorry, had to throw that one in.
