benbenson,

I don't know if ex-cons have their 2nd amendment rights revoked; but if it is, I think its a law that makes an awful lot of sense. Just like notifying the police department if a sex offender is moving into a city; just my very humble opinion.

This principle was taught by Jesus himself:

To me it does not make much sense.

If a person has been released from prison, he should be rehabilitated, in other words he is no longer considered a threat. If he were still a threat, he has no business being released back into society.

I don't believe in lifelong, collateral type punishments that aren't given as specific punishment by a judge and jury to a crime.

If a some offender is still seen as threatening by his nature, don't release him. Give the sex offender a choice between an extremely long sentence or chemical castration. Keep the killers locked up, and reserve the cells for them and not some kid with a bag of marijuana (not that I condone drug use, I just keep it in perspective). I don't agree with making extremely harsh penalties to blanket all people (say someone who didn't pay a fine in a national park)

I don't know if you know, but it is incredibly easy to get a felony charge nowadays. There are people that get charged with hate crimes for praying in front of abortion clinics, etc. Pretty soon it will be a hate crime for your kid to carry a bible to school. Not to mention legislation that would make it hate crime for pastors to preach the word of God, and that homosexuality is an abomination. Do you agree that these people should not be allowed any right to vote or own a firearm (let alone be barred from any decent employment,etc) for their entire lives? I don't.

Hi, Im a Texan and am trying to fully understand our new law.
Could you define "travel"..does it have to cross county lines for example..or could it be a short trip across town?

The travelling across county lines rule was taken out several years ago. This is the explanation of the term "travelling" from the actual statute:

(i) For purposes of Subsection (b)(3), a person is presumed
to be traveling if the person is:
(1) in a private motor vehicle;
(2) not otherwise engaged in criminal activity, other
than a Class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance
regulating traffic;
(3) not otherwise prohibited by law from possessing a
firearm;
(4) not a member of a criminal street gang, as defined
by Section 71.01; and
(5) not carrying a handgun in plain view.

Text of subsec. (i) as added by Acts 2005, 79th Leg., ch. 976, § 4

As a Peace Officer (Police Officer, Cop, whaterver you want to call us) I reccomend that you use the utmost in safety and discretion when travelling with any firearm, especially a handgun. Don't store it anywhere in the vehicle where the trigger can be engaged by something sticking out from a seat frame or something stored in betwen or under a seat. If you are keeping a handgun in your vehicle while travelling, put it in a wool or fabric lined zippered bag and keep it concealed.

And no matter what - TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR CAR WHEN YOU GET TO YOUR DESTINATION AND SECURE IT!! I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF SOMEONE BURGLARIZING YOUR CAR DOESN'T FIND IT - A CHILD WILL!!

I could go on and on, but one more thing: Don't carry a handgun you don't know how to use. If you want the best in ease of use with no bells and whistles and you want no complications - go with a Glock.

Peace - Patrick

Just to comment on StarVoyager's post, another very good, simple gun is the revolver. I know everybody uses autos now, but there is nothing wrong with a good, medium-frame revolver. I have carried many revolvers over the years. They have been split between small, medium and large frame guns. For beginners, a medium-frame, four inch barreled .38 Special or .357 is hard to beat. I have actually carried four-inch S&W N-frames. However, they are a bit on the heavy side. I loaded my four-inch .44 magnum with .44 Specials when I carried it for defense. I also had a four-inch Smith in .45 Colt. Nice gun. I wish I still had it.

I agree with StarVoyager. Glock's are great. I carry a Glock 30 (compact .45) off-duty and a Glock 22 (.40) on-duty. I just sold my wife's S&W Sigma (9mm)...piece of garbage by the way...so she could get a Glock 17 (9mm). Being a police officer in Oklahoma, I carry some other weapons that are sure to get me out of a bind, like my Bushmaster AR-15 and my Remington 870 (12 ga.) Anyway, I have other guns, but the Glock is my favorite.

Thanks PAtrick,

Its just a .22 Browning semi auto pistol, and yes I am very good with it
and practice safety. Although the firepower isnt much I dont miss and the clip holds 10 so it will have to do for the trip to the coast.

I will fish into the night at the beach, not far from Houston
and like to keep it with me there for the most part.

I sure do want a Glock though, 9mm should do.

Forgot the 9mm - .40 S&W is a much better round, and with hi-cap mags, you can carry 15 in the mag, and one in the pipe. I carry the Glock Md. 22 in .40 S&W - and I love it.

If you are going to carry a .22, I suggest CCI Stingers or another hyper-velocity, hollow-point round. I have a little North American 5 shot .22 LR revolver I carry in my pocket sometimes... the Stingers in it travel 1640 fps... they are some of the fastest and best .22 rounds out there.

I fish at Surfside and San Luis Pass - is that close to where you go?

As you guys might be able to guess, I really like the Springfield XD platform. I have a 9mm and .45 tactical. I shoot both of them in IDPA. I have carried both on differring occasions, but my preferred carry, most of the time is a Kimber Ultra Carry.

living4JC,
Byrd gave you an excellent evaluation of the CZ line, however, CZ does not make anything in a .38 super. I believe what you have is a .380 auto.

A little off topic, but I have been a long time lurker. I have prayed for some of the requests mentioned in that part of the forum. Glad to have joined!

I am proud to say, that my DH and I both passed our CHL classes yesterday. There were three of us in the class, and I was the only girl. :lol2 I think I got some special attention for it too. :heh I scored a 238 out of 250. Not as good as I would have liked but still expert. My husband got 248 out of 250. (he makes me sick)

All we have to do is mail out our paper work and wait for our licenses.

Well, finally signing up for my Conceal/Carry class on the 27th of this month (my wife finally gave me the go ahead!). I'm pumped!! I think I'm going to end up getting the Bersa .380 instead of the CZ because of what I've read, and it seemed to be built better. However, I need to get to the range to test them both out and see what feels better. I'm still also torn about maybe getting a 9mm.....then of course, there's always the 1911.....
