Description
Experts have recorded 150 tremors on the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro, since yesterday, sparking fears of an imminent earthquake and volcanic eruption. The last eruption in 1793 continued for one month. 53 people were evacuated from their homes last night amidst fears of landslides and the army has been called in to assist with preparations for further evacuations: two emergency intervention units attached to the Spanish military have been despatched today to help with any evacuation operation. And schools have been closed until further notice. The tunnel linking Frontera and Valverde is also closed to travellers. A quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale was recorded yesterday and felt all over the island. The 108 square mile island is home to 10,000 residents and is popular with Brits seeking quiet holidays. More than 8,000 tremors have been recorded in El Hierro over the past two months.

Krakatau Volcano, Indonesia
Krakatau volcano in Indonesia was raised to level 3 alert (out of maximum 4) on 30th September 2011. Between 18-30 September volcanic earthquakes and tremor were recorded at the volcano. Explosive eruptions have occurred intermittently at the volcano between 2007 and 2011. During this time Strombolian eruptions sent ash and lapilli to a radius of 1.5 km from the crater. Volcanic bombs may fall over the whole island at any time. Explosive eruptions in July 2011 destroyed the seismic monitoring equipment, which resumed operation on 18th September. A 2km exclusion zone has been placed around the volcano.

Hierro Volcano, Canary Islands
Earthquakes continue at Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands. Since July 2011 over 8000 small earthquakes have been recorded at the volcano. Yesterday an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred. Deformation has increased significantly at the volcano in the past week. On 23rd September 2011 the alert level was raised to YELLOW. Some residents have been evacuated from near the volcano. Earthquakes are occurring in the northwest of the island at the location of a landslide that created a 100 metre high tsunami about 50,000 years ago. A major debris avalanche occurred on the northern flank of Hierro Island, dated about 13,000 years ago. It had a width of 15 km and a scarp height of 1000 m. The landslide deposited 150-180 cubic km of debris on the seafloor down to a depth of 3000 m.

Subsea Volcanic Eruption Underway Near El Hierro (The Canary Islands)
A submarine volcanic eruption is taking place approximately 5 kilometres off the southern coast of El Hierro, the smallest of The Canary Islands.
The Mayor of La Frontera (El Hierro), David Cabrera, confirmed in an interview on Radio iron Garoé that ‘underwater eruption’ is taking place about 900 metres beneath the sea surface five kilometres south of La Restinga. The eruption has been ongoing for four hours, the Mayor said.
Spanish newspaper laopionion.es quoted the Minister of emergencies of the Cabildo of El Hierro, Maria of Carmen Morales, as saying the eruption is taking place because ‘the seismic movement of 4.3 occurred on Saturday afternoon caused a fissure, from where the energy is been released’. Scientists remain unclear if the emissions are gas or lava.

Red Alert issued in El Hierro town as underwater volcano erupts
October 11, 2011 – CANARY ISLANDS – El Hierro. Google MapsSpain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) confirmed on Tuesday that an underwater eruption has occurred five kilomtres off the southern coastline of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Island. The eruption is Spain’s first since the eruption in 1971 of the Teneguía volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). The IGN says all three of its seismic stations on El Hierro in the Canary Islands have registered a volcanic tremor of low frequency in the south of the island at La Restinga, the southern-most village in the Canaries. Residents of the town were summoned to a local football field on Tuesday afternoon to be briefed on provisional evacuation procedures in the event of another eruption closer to the shore.
