Thread: Speaking In Tongues?

I do not mean to jump in this deep discussion, but I would have to say if you look at 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 and also 1 Corinthians 14:1-40 it is for the church and is still for us- I do not know why we would just throw these couple of chapters out the window. I have not found anywhere where it says in Scripture that the gifts are no longer in use for us ( may be I am wrong- feel free to show me where). I would have to be agreement with Wally in saying though that whatever is given by the Spirit is totally for God's Glory and for His use.
There are too many here in the US that are being led by demons to counterfeit the gifts and use them for their own purposes, but I would also have to say that there are many who are, like born-again Muslims, prophecying and seeing visions and healing in other countries right now as we speak- so then are we going to judge them and say they are false prophets and not from God?
Also, when we get to divisions like this let us always remember 1 Corinthians 1:10- "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you: but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."

    Oh goodness...lol
I'm not talking about speaking a language you already know. I think you missed my point. The BIBLICAL tongues I'm talking about is speaking a foreign language that you've never learned before. If you've never learned French before and you're gifted with tongues to speak French, then that IS speaking in tongues. There are stories of missionaries gifted to speak in a native dialect as well.
Acts 2:6-8 clearly proves that point.

IMO I think most(probably not all) "babble" or sounds are nothing more than charismatic speech that draws the attention to the person and not Christ. It's as bad as the churches that try to teach people to speak in tongues. Noises and shaking is just a show and nothing more IMO.

There's obviously a difference in how we're understanding the scripture but I wouldn't turn to a Philosopher to back up my argument.

I hope this link is ok and if it's not the moderators will remove it but in my opinion, it gives a very detailed explanation on how I understand the Scripture surrounding the gift of speaking in tongues. I won't argue about this topic though, you have your belief, Glory in Print has his/her's and I have mine.
    Good article, Christina. Thank you.

harvest, thank you for clarifying. When I refer to "speaking in tongues" and not believing that it is happening in this day and age, I am referring to the "babble", the sounds and syllables that don't even constitute words in ANY language.

Many Pentecostal churches and charasmatic churches actually believe in this "babble" as speaking in tongues, my husband is one of those people (we have this debate on an ongoing basis). When he says he believes in speaking in tongues he also thinks the Bible when speaking of "tongues" is not speaking about a language that we've never learned, he actually believes that the Bible is referring to that which I call "babble", he truly believes that this is still happening today.

As for languages that I have never learned, like Spanish....my husband speaks it all the time to his friends and family so if that is what is meant by speaking in tongues then I'll bite because it doesn't take a genuis to figure out that there are alot of languages all over the world that I or we have never learned so it's quite obvious that in that context, yes, speaking in tongues is happening today but if you ask me about this "speaking in tongues" that I refer to as "babble" (as Glory in Print speaks of) then no, I do not believe that God issues this gift anymore but if He does....I sure don't believe that it's happening only in certain churches (like Pentecostal and some Evangelical) but not in the others, that would be the same as saying that ONLY those churches are blessed with the gift and my arguement there is that these churches are not the only churches that have true believers in them so why wouldn't it be happening in all true Doctrinal churches?

The link to the article I posted sums it up for me as to what I believe about the "speaking in tongues" (the "babble" form mentioned earlier)

Well I believe as with everything there are extremes.

I'm on the fence about it, but I am siding a little toward speaking in tongues having some Biblical basis for today.

Paul talks about how people in the congregation have received gifts, some have the gift of healing, some the gift of prophecy, some the gift of tongues, etc. etc.

I think the whole Vineyard movement thing has seriously damaged the reputation of tongues. I personally don't think quacking like a chicken or barking like a dog is particularly fruitful spiritually.

At the same time, I don't think completely denying tongues for our day and age is completely right either.

There has to be a happy middle somewhere in there

    Yay! Saw Perry Stone

I have always been a big fan of Perry Stone, and have always wanted to see him in person. Well last week, my Aunt took me because she knows How much I like him, and got her watching him, along with Hal Lindsey, etc. First of all, I don't think I have ever enjoyed service more than that day, and really felt the power of God. I rededicated my life after back sliding really bad, the last few years, and My Aunt went up and got Saved. Was a great day, and plan on going to see him again twice next month when he is close by.

And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
    (Rom 8:23-27)

You receive the 'first fruits of the Spirit' when you are saved. That 'helper' intercedes for you.
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.
    (Psa 19:1b-2)

Read the Word out loud Prayerfully by taking a scripture.

Read it/pray it from the deepest part of your heart/your gut/your spirit.

Let me explain a little. When a person is given voice lessons to sing, the person is taught to sing from the diaphragm. There is a difference when people sing from 'their head' and when they sing from their diaphragm.

Many people believe that praying through the Spirit is praying in tongues. Well, for those who do not, how do they pray through the Spirit?

You pray using the Word of God, focusing and concentrating on the scriptures.
    As an example...take
    John 1:1
In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and the WORD was GOD.
    vs 14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld HIS Glory, the Glory as of the Only Begotten of the Father,) Full of Grace and Truth.
When I read this scripture I pray it something like this:
In the beginning was the WORD. LORD JESUS-YOU are the WORD of GOD. YOU were in the beginning with GOD the FATHER and GOD the HOLY SPIRIT. (Genesis 1:26)
    Vs 4
In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men.

And YOU became flesh to dwell among us and to give us LIFE, Abundant LIFE. (John 10:10b) ->I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Thank YOU LORD JESUS that YOU came that I would have LIFE and have it more abundantly! You are FULL of GRACE and TRUTH. YOU are the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE and no man, no person can come to the Father but through YOU. (John 14:6)
Praise You Lord Jesus! Praise You Abba Father! for sending us Your Beloved and Only Begotten Son-JESUS. Praise You Holy Spirit for leading me in the path of Righteousness-who is JESUS.
Pray like this and I guarantee you'll be praying through the Spirit in spirit.

    Hope this was helpful. :-)

Praying in the spirit is praying in tongues..No matter what you have been taught tongues is a gift for today, those who have unbelief in this gift, can't receive it, because this gift is received by faith.

First Corinthians 14:13-14 says, “Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he might interpret. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful

(JUDE 1:20) But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.

    You have that backwards.

However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
    (Rom 8:9-11)

However, the reverse is true. That praying in tongues is praying in the spirit, but it isnt the definition of it..
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.

When thinking about praying in the spirit I often think of David who was described as a man after God's own heart. He had his deep struggles but he had such passion when he surrendered to the Lord. John Eldridge has written several books that deal with connecting through scripture and experience to God...I think Captivating is a good one that I read and gave to my daughters.

Jesus seems to be in agreement with that...

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They *said to Him, "The son of David." He *said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'? "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?" No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.
