Thread: Old Time Rock N Roll?

Default Old Time Rock N Roll?

Does anyone since getting saved still listen to secular music? I have lost my desire for such and now listen only to christian music.

I was just wondering how much of the secular world (as far as entertainment goes) believers still engage in. What do you think is still acceptable for a Christian to watch or read or listen to?

I have grown away from it, but if a song comes on the radio I know, you will hear me stomping my foot or see a slight banging of the head

I listen to mostly classical and dinner jazz. Does that count?

I rarely listen to the radio. I do like Christian music, especially worship songs. I don't really have a desire to listen to secular music, but sometimes the "80's nostalgia" creeps up on me.....

When I do listen to anything other than talk radio, it's usually just oldies stations...with music from 50's and very early 60's....things were so much simpler then....and I welcome the uncomplicated memories....sorry for barging in...couldn't resist.

Just take those old records off the shelf.....

I know this is the guys room. But....

When I was first saved I only listened to Christian music, praise mostly. Some of the Christian music today is so weak and scripturally unsound, so I've become more discerning there.

Over the last few years I've found myself nostalgic and when I hear music from the 60's and early 70's it takes me back to my younger days. i'll be found singing along!

I truly love classical music, classical guitar, some jazz, and of course, (Il Divo!!!! I just had to include that, because they are all classically trained.)

I've noticed the farther I am from God the more I want my RR music-that says it all.

I don't see anything wrong with listening to secular music as long as it does not have cursing in it and other things. I used to listen to rap alot but I have stopped listening to that now. I still listen to certain country songs and some classic rock songs. I don't listen to drinking songs or anything like that, but, I do listen to songs like sweet home alabama, country boy can survive, and etc.

I used to love secular rock and roll, but since my rededication to Christ that music seems empty and pointless compared to good Christian music. (Newsboys, Michael W Smith, Matt Redman, etc)

I still listen and still play it on my guitars. You do have to censor it just like songs in the church. Not all hymns are scriptural. Ed's version of Eruption is more scripturally correct than most Christmas hymns.

I'll listen to Hannity, but not Limbaugh. Flag waving draft-dodgers don't have too much credibility with me. Limbaugh saw to it he got an exemption for the very medical condition his father got a waiver for so he could get in.
I'll listen to Hannity, Glen Beck, and others, but do find it curious none of them had any military service.

As for listening to secular music, yeah, sure, I see nothing wrong with it. For me personally, I'm talking about when the music had words you could actually understand and didn't sound like some angry street thug rapping with voo doo drums in the background.

Very rarely listen to the rock and roll of my youth.
Boston, Moody Blues, CSNY, Molly Hatchett, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eagles,Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Little Feat, Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppellin....
Favorite air guitar song: "Flirtin' with disaster" by Molly Hatchett, and yes I am VERY good.

Over the years I have changed a lot of the words to songs. Mick Jagger wouldn't recognize my version of his lyrics.
Mostly it's talk radio, conservative or Christian.

I don't think that's the best standard. One of my friends listen to rap music and doesn't think there's anything wrong with it, even though there's a lot of swearing and violence in the lyrics. And what about the Israelites when they came out of Egypt, and Moses left the camp to get the Ten Commandments, and when he came back everyone was dancing and playing rock music, and Moses thought the camp was being attacked. It clearly states that God was displeased with that music. So personal convictions aren't a clear guide, imo.

The Jews were playing Rock music while dancing around to it when Moses got the Decalogue?

I am thinking G-d was displeased with the music and dancing as it was to an idol and the Jews had turned their back on G-d as they thought Moses wasn't coming back and Took G-d with him... And yes G-d was displeased at the Idol and such.. but I am not thinking that Bob Seger was PPlaying Old Time Rock and Roll in the Back Ground and the Jews playing an air sax dancing around was happening...

NOw Triumph was one of my favorites back in the day but i tend to listen to alot of everything but most CCM then the Jazz Standards and country

First of all what is defined as secular music? I listen to music constantly, I listen to a ton of different styles and genres. I listen to Classical music, world music, gregorian chants, prison chain gang songs, celtic, top 40, emo, screamo, old rock, new rock, metal, blue grass, honky tonk, polka, reggae, techno trance, and punk. I listen to everything. Well except for rap because rap sucks. This is not debatable. It does.
So when people say secular music are they pretty much just talking about rock music?
When I hear Chopin, or Cloe Agnew, Enya, or something like that It is secular technically, but I can appreciate it just as much as I can christian music. It mellows me and I enjoy the music.

I had a lot of music that was straight up satanic, I got rid of that music. However there is a lot of secular music that i can listen to and think about God and things like that.

Anyway here since I started thinking about it here is Chloe Agnew
