We have, as a whole, a fairly quiet day. Chile still seems to be the most active but it is far less than it has been lately. Lets hope things stay that way for a while, a long while.

Chile and the U S & Alaska regions still remain fairly active. Japan had two quakes today, one of which was a 6.6. Nothing apocalyptic since the 8.8 in Chile, but unsettling just the same.

Power blackout hits Chile two weeks after quake - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE62E0AO20100315

(Reuters) - Cities across Chile were without power on Sunday and output at some mines disrupted after a main power grid failed a fortnight after a massive earthquake killed hundreds and ravaged infrastructure.

State mining giant Codelco, the world's top copper producer, said the disruption shut its mines in central Chile. But its Codelco Norte division in the northern part of the country was unaffected.

Global miner BHP Billiton's Escondida deposit, the world's largest copper mine, was operating normally and was not affected, a union leader said.

Most of Chile's copper mines are on the northern power grid, which was not hit by the blackout on the central grid.

Presidency Minister Cristian Larroulet said power could return in the coming hours.

The blackout began at 8:50 p.m. (2350 GMT) and affected the capital, Santiago, as well as cities such as Concepcion, which was recently devastated by a major earthquake.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter told local media the blackout was due to a problem with a-500 kilowatt transformer.

He said that while the power outage was not directly related to an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on February 27, there would be an investigation to see whether there was an indirect cause.

He said it was not clear how long it would take for the power supply to fully recover. Power was slowly coming back to some parts of Santiago, but many other cities were still in darkness. Phone service was also down in much of the country, witnesses said.

The Central Interconnected System, or SIC grid, was the one affected. It delivers power to many cities in the country including the capital.

"We've stopped receiving energy in the Santiago distribution grid," Juan Pablo Larrain, spokesman Chilectra power company told Chile's TVN television.

Widespread power blackout hits Chile - http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/03/14...ut-hits-chile/

Much of Chile was in the dark Sunday after a widespread blackout knocked out power to 90 percent of the country, CNN's sister network in the country reported.

The blackout was caused by a failure to the country's central electric system, but it was unclear what led to the failure, CNN Chile reported, citing Chilectra, a power company that provides electricity to the capital, Santiago.

Subway service was also affected, CNN Chile said, but all passengers had been evacuated from stopped trains as of Sunday night.

The blackout comes two weeks after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country, killing more than 500 people. Aftershocks as high as magnitude 7.2 continue to disrupt recovery efforts.

Even though they had a 6.0 today Chile is seriously slowing down with by far the lowest count since the 8.8 event. Puerto Rico has gotten more active today with the highest count except for the U S & Alaska.

Magnitude 6.7 aftershock hits off coast of Chile - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE62F0DC20100316

(Reuters) - A magnitude 6.7 aftershock struck off the coast of Chile on Monday night about 45 miles northwest of Concepcion, which was heavily damaged in an 8.8 magnitude quake on February 27, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Monday.

The epicenter of the aftershock was at a depth of 21.7 miles in the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said historical data indicated the aftershock would not generate a tsunami but advised authorities in much of the Pacific region to be aware of the possibility.
