I think Catholics pray "THROUGH" Mary, not TO Mary. I's like... They can only talk to Mary and Mary will relay their message to Jesus. I never got the impression that Mary was elevated above Jesus.

    not a Catholic, however

I was brought up Catholic, (no longer am) and prayed the Hail Mary, alot. At the end of that prayer, is a request to her to pray for us sinners.
My grandparents died in their Catholic faith....my grandfather calling out to Mary on his death bed, instead of to Jesus.

Actually, I think the "Hail Mary" prayer is praying *to* Mary. She is, after all, the "Queen of Heaven" (say the Catholics) and she supposedly tells Jesus what to do.
I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. (Rev. 3:8,10)

They also equate the Pope with God Himself

    My Rapture/Left Behind Message

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.

Oh really? Check this one out...

    Hail Holy Queen,
    Mother of mercy,
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping
    In this valley of tears.
    Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy towards us.
    And after this, our exile,
Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement O loving O sweet Virgin Mary.

Who is our hope? Who is our life? Who should we send up our sighs to? Who shows us mercy?

I was raised Catholic and even when I was still a part of that organization I would cringe when I would say that prayer. Even then I knew it was wrong.

We are to pray to God THROUGH JESUS.

1 Timothy 2:5 (King James Version)

    5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
We cannot communicate with the dead. We can only communicate with the living. God is alive and Jesus is alive.
    Romans 16:17-18
    King James Version (KJV)

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

Exactly. When we pray, we finish 'In Jesus Name; Amen'. We don't recite 'In Mary's name, amen' nor do we pray 'In the Pope's name, Amen'. Nor do we even 'In the name of the Saints, amen'.
