There sre just so many people troubled by daily reports of war, death, financial despair, etc. People are looking for comfort and peace of mind, so they go to what seems stable.
Add in the fact that the mega church, watered down protestantism gives nobody a reason to stay and you have the perfect storm. Since you have family in it, you see the fear that is leveled at the person who questions. "How dare you question, catholocism is older than them all" or some such silliness. The way my family reacted when I came to know Jesus was pretty odd along those lines, it was as though I had joined a cult and needed an intervention. My father wanted me to go meet with a priest before it was too late, as though I was destined to hell.
They are trapped, never questioning, never verifying, never evaluating the claims of their dogma, they are just dutiful adherents. Typical catholocism is filled with church mandates, mindlessly do this and do that, look busy God is watching, be good etc. There is zero personal study or appeal to holiness as led by The Holy Spirit. No call to repentance and a realization of the personal, substitutionary atonement of Jesus. No exploration of what it means to be Born Again, and the animated life that will produce. The orders to the Spirit led believer comes from the top, and The Holy spirit leads us independent of any church. In catholocism the church is the top, and they dictate what is to be believed.
Simply stated, to the subjects enslaved to the catholic church it is the be all end all for all matters of life (here and hereafter) and faith. It is a perfect recipe for people looking for peace of mind to come under control of a strongman.
