Mezzer, love the owl picture! We watched "Legend of the Guardians" last night, and I could have sworn I saw OWL and Hootmon. No buzzards, though, just bats. I kept pointing out to DH how it was funny that the owls had blacksmithing skills (their helmets and metal talons), tailoring (banners) and the ability to make fire. I also pointed out how the Guardians (the good owls) must have been Alliance (World of Warcraft) because they had blue banners and the Pure Ones (the evil owls) must have been Horde because they had red ones. Good movie, though.

And HB, nope, my windows get a serious clean about twice a year. It did rain ALL DAY LONG yesterday, just like it snowed ALL DAY LONG last Saturday.
I'll remember that when I'm equipping my Mithril Helm of the OWL PS.... those Pure Ones were obviously evil Arakkoa........

I seen it was 2000 and One Duck also, died....(the newstory had to add the duck)

The Video creeped me out. And the reporter was crouching down, showed one bird who was alive, injured and going around in circles. She said it wasn't even making any sounds. It seemed confused. I hoped she was going to at least get someone to take this bird, and have it tested while alive. (I am not buying Stressed related or even Hail).
Birds and Ducks, have survived fireworks and hail throughout history,,,,sooooo

This reminds me of a movie.... I forget which one, it was one of those "end of the world disaster movies" and it started with birds smashing into office towers for no apparent reason. Remember that? Something about sound waves causing them to be disoriented....hmmm this will drive me crazy now till I can remember which movie that was.

I believe it was "The Core," starring Aaron Eckhart. Something to do with the earth's outer liquid core stopped rotating and that upsetting the earth's electromagnetic field.

Found this on a website... "It is also true that the magnetic field is generated by the rotation of the dense, iron, liquid outer core and that this field extends about 126,000 meters (approx. 78 miles) out into space. As the outer core fluid is driven by convection currents, a dynamo effect of circulating electric current is produced inside Earth, exactly as Professor Keyes explained in the movie.
Notice that the North Magnetic Pole is not the true Geographic North Pole. There is a declination of about 12°. The magnetic field exits the South Geomagnetic Pole and enters Earth at the North Geomagnetic Pole.
The geomagnetic field protects us from harmful charged particles emitted by the sun.
In fact, fluctuations in the strength of our magnetic field, due to intermittent solar flares, sometimes allow more cosmic radiation to reach Earth. An increase in cosmic radiation can temporarily affect power grids, cable and satellite reception and communications systems on spacecraft, enlarge atmospheric ozone holes and generate more aurora activity.2
Such fluctuations are temporary and small in scale. Larger magnetic fluctuations, called Magnetic Reversals, where the North and South Magnetic Poles flip their positions, have occurred many times in Earth's history, (171 times in the last 71 million years, according to scientific evidence). The average interval of magnetic field reversal is approximately 250,000 years. However, the last magnetic reversal happened approximately 730,000-780,000 years ago. Throughout all of geologic time, there is no evidence that the Electromagnetic Field ever ceased to function, or that the outer core ever stopped rotating as depicted in the movie.

Hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting that. I didnt want Nightelf to lose their mind. You know, its funny, but I think it was last year or the year before, my daughter in New York told me that there were tons and tons of dead birds all over the ground up there. She was wondering if it was that bird virus. In the Arkansas case tho, seems that its either weather related or perhaps something with the birds' sense of where they are. Like, how geese have an inner navigation system - I think that's related to earth's magnetic field isnt it? This is very strange.

    That's the movie! Thanks GrannyVee!

Could you provide a link for that article, we like to provide proper citation whenever we quote off the 'net here. Thanks!

I live in Arkansas with a very close friend in Beebe. I called her when I read about this earlier today. She said that she had not seen any dead birds. However, she wondered if some people were posion them due to the fact they have been overran with black birds this year. She also mentioned that she had heard several people talking about putting out posion for them to kill them off.

The only problem with this is either you have to believe that quite a few people put posion out at the same time so they could all die at the same time or one person put out a very large quanity of posion and they all fed there about the same time.

    5,000 birds? I don't think so.

Thanks GrannyVee that is very interesting to my science mind. I don't believe the scientists that are not open to a potential connection between the bird and fish kills. This tends to be the community that believes in evolution and not the Creator. The scientific model unfortunately does not allow one to see or find truth, unless it is studied for 10 years at a cost of 10 million, repeatable and peer reviewd.

A fish kill usually says toxic overload or oxygen depletion by sudden algal/diatom growth. Diatoms were responsible for a huge fishkill here in Indy. Bird kill is weird though, could be lots of things like lightening, bird flu, toxic gas release or perhaps toxic pools where they were resting. And these are red-winged blackbirds that eat insects and hang out next to water. Could definately be a toxic water connection. Sounds like a man-made release and whoever's responsible is about to get nailed.

What's HAARP? Every once in a while when I'm reading the comments section of an article I'll see a few, "It's HAARP!" but I've never understood what they were talking about.

As you've already been advised, this was The Core. It was supposedly due to the loss of the magnetic field. However, that effect was highly exaggerated. Birds use that for long distance migration, so all it would do is cause them to go off course over a long trip. It wouldn't make them start slamming into buildings.

DH and I were talking about this today. He says the bird thing doesn't bother him as much as the fish, because people could be drinking or coming in contact with the water the fish were in. The boys started back to school today (tomorrow for me), so DH and I were home by ourselves. We went to get groceries, and when we got home, I was carrying in bags, I looked down, and saw . . .

. . . a dead female cardinal!! And we had JUST been talking about the birds in Arkansas! I know it was probably one of our cats that killed it, but it was freaky anyway.

The birds -- most of which were dead -- were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said.

Karen Rowe, an ornithologist for the commission, said the incident is not that unusual and is often caused by a lightning strike or high-altitude hail.

A strong storm system moved through the state earlier in the day Friday.

Officials also speculated that fireworks shot by New Year's revelers in the area might have caused severe stress in the birds.

"Since it only involved a flock of blackbirds and only involved them falling out of the sky, it is unlikely they were poisoned, but a necropsy is the only way to determine if the birds died from trauma or toxin," Rowe said.

The dead birds will be sent for testing to labs at the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission and the National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin.

OK, since when did that many birds start flying at night? I am out every night between 1 and 6 am and I see a few birds sitting on nests, some sit in the road to get the warmth off of the road, some of them will fly up when they are startled but that was a lot of birds in a small area, in the 9+ yrs I have driven for 3 hours every night I have never seen anywhere close to that many birds in one area, I doubt I've seen that many in the whole 9+ yrs.(BTW, I'm a paper carrier) And if those birds died from a toxin, there would be other species of birds to die also.
