In Christ Church New Zealand is being reported by Fox News!

I can't provide a link to this news b/c it's just been released live on television.

The newsfeed at the bottom of the announcement states that "buildings are down....and the situation appears to be serious." I don't know how serious they mean when they report "serious" but by my understanding, a 7.3 earthquake is pretty darn serious. At least this is IMO.

Anyone else see this?

....But the earth quake should be read as 6.3 instead of 7.3.. I misunderstood the reporter.

But this is still a big quake, IMHO.

With good building codes, a 6 pointer shouldn't be that big a deal.

7.0, you get some serious damage. Think Haiti.

I heard this report also and the reporter did say that buildings were down. Didn't Christcurch, New Zealnd have a big EQ last year? If's o, I'm wondering if buildings are down because they may have had some damage from that last EQ.

You are probably correct about the buildings still being damaged from last year. It was Christchurch that got hit last year.

The depth was rather shallow at 2.5 miles isn't it? Its my understanding, that the more shallow the quake, the more damage it does. I don't live in an earthquake zone, so perhaps someone that does and understands these things can pipe in.

A shallower quake at say 6.0 in the same area can do more damage than if 6.0 and deeper....there is less earth to shake.

Is it just me, or is this just like a huge neon sign from our Lord saying "I'm coming, I'm coming!" and not just because it's another earthquake, but because of the name of the location (which just got hit last year).
