Not to split hairs here, but if you'd read the article you'd see that it has nothing to do with carpentry, but with international export/import laws.

That being said, I think the whole thing is a little ridiculous. The Justice Dept. needs to get its stuff figured out. I happen to like Gibson guitars.

It would seem that because the CEO/Owner gives to the Republican Party that warrants - literally - a raid by the Eric Holder-led (and Obama flunky) FBI. Wow, Black Panthers (and Obama supporters), who barred American voters from entering voting polls in PA and threatened them with physical violence, under direct orders from AG Eric Holder were purposely NOT prosecuted, but he then authorizes the raiding of an American company for this? The Indian government has told the Justice Dept. that everything Gibson did was legal and above board. This all boils down to Obama and his entire administration being completely out-of-control and doing whatever they want to American citizens who disagree with their idealogy. The thugs who supported Obama aren't prosecuted, but a reputable company who's done no wrong is prosecuted because the owner supports the Republicans. This is not only morally wrong, it's unConstitutional and Obama, Holder, and this entire administration should be prosecuted themselves, but it's never going to happen. Our only hope is that enough Americans will vote to fire Obama and his merry band of thugs in November 2012...or at least more votes than all the fraudulent ones that will be cast by ACORN, SEIU, etc. for Obama. I am SO sick of Obama, the Democrats, and the lamestream media's downright CRIMINAL acts!!!

The administration is so saturated with corruption. I am sick of it too! Every day there is something new. I can't wait for the election or the rapture; whichever comes first.

I remember hearing about this a couple weeks back on Fox News and thought it was ridiculous. It seems there was a loophole in the law that allowed Gibson to be targeted. Gibson was singled out because of their leanings toward republican votes. Other guitar companies getting the same materials from the same providers in the same way were overlooked in this. Ironically those other guitar companies are democratic companies... hmmmm. I'm tempted to out and buy a Gibson just to support them, although I'm more of an Ibanez, Jackson, or Schecter kinda guy.

It sounds like Gibson may be breaking Indian export laws.

The documents noted that Indian law "prohibits the export of sawn wood," which can be used for fingerboards -- but does not prohibit the export of "veneers," which are sheets of woods that have already been worked on.
The search warrants alleged that the intercepted shipment was "falsely declared" as veneer, something that would have been legal. However, the documents said the ebony was in fact unfinished "sawn wood," supposedly illegal.

Regardless of the technicalities, is this really something that the government should be spending time and money on in this age of multiple crisis and problems? They didn't have a problem with the other guitar companies, as it was stated, were doing exactly the same thing. They apparently raided the company and confiscated all the materials. Now, what will be done with those? Auctioned off in a government auction? So , in point of fact, if so, the government stops a company from doing something, and then makes money selling the very materials it says were illegal. It gets twisted all out of proportion.

6string, aren't all of the Brand names (except hi-end customs), made in China?

And what will the Feds do with the impounded wood.....

Sell it to the unraided companies?

Musical instruments are very dependent on special woods. How would one know the source? Artist everywhere now have to examine even discarded scrap wood
as it may contain a 1" square block of indonesian Obama gum wood. The horror ----receiving banned goods.

Oh well. My Seagull is from Quebec. I wonder how many loops it had to hop through to get here?

And what about that RPG-7 I just picked up? Who knows what kind of wood those ruskies slapped on my new bazooka......

The real shame would be if they found out Gibson was money muscled to get the wood for a precious gift for some liberal millionare.

They can build themselves a woodshed and put themselves in it.

One good thing about this incident, and Solyndra, and other things coming out now: the magnitude of the stink, like living next door to a pig farm, or on top of a garbage dump, eventually overpowers even those who have lost the sense of smell (their eyes water). And a lot of them vote.
