Default Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Dallas calls Romney’s Mormonism a Cult

Robert Jeffress said his views on Mormons are widely held by evangelicals.

WASHINGTON — A Texas pastor introduced Rick Perry at a major conference of Christian conservatives here on Friday as “a genuine follower of Jesus Christ” and then walked outside and attacked Mitt Romney’s religion, calling the Mormon Church a cult and stating that Mr. Romney “is not a Christian.”

The comments by the pastor, Robert Jeffress of Dallas, injected a potentially explosive issue into the presidential campaign: the belief held by many evangelicals that Mormons are not Christians.

And it raised immediate suspicions that the attack might have been a way for surrogates or supporters of Mr. Perry, the Texas governor, who has stumbled in recent weeks, to gain ground by raising religious concerns about Mr. Romney. Mr. Jeffress similarly attacked Mr. Romney and his faith during the 2008 campaign.

The Perry campaign sought to put some distance between Mr. Perry and Mr. Jeffress, stating that the governor “does not believe Mormonism is a cult” and that Mr. Jeffress was chosen to speak by the organizers of the event, the Values Voter Summit, which was put on by the Family Research Council, the American Family Association and other evangelical Christian groups.

But in a statement, the Family Research Council president, Tony Perkins, said the Perry campaign had approved using Mr. Jeffress to introduce the governor. “Pastor Jeffress was suggested to us as a possible introductory speaker because he serves as pastor of one of the largest churches in Texas,” Mr. Perkins said. “We sent the request to the Perry campaign which then signed off on the request.”

Aides to Mr. Perry did not respond to a number of questions, including whether he was aware of Mr. Jeffress’s record of calling the Mormon Church a “cult” and denying Mr. Romney’s Christianity; whether he has ever talked with Mr. Jeffress about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and the nature of their relationship.

kudos to Pastor Jeffress. wish more SBC pastors were like him and less like Ed Young Jr. and Rick Warren and Perry Noble

btw, considering Governor Perry's support for the NAR cult peddlers, I am not surprised he tried to side-step the question on Mormons

Governor Perry needs a backbone and the gift of Discernment big time

So..Perry doesn't believe that Mormonism is a cult? That either shows that he has no discernment whatsover or that he will throw away his convictions for more votes.

Rick Perry has aligned with NAR peddlers, so that alone shows he lacks discernment skills

How is this going to play out? Will this explode and break the GOP election hopes? Will democrats and the liberal media go for the throat on this and portray fundamentalist, literalist, Bible believers as hate mongers? Will this more quickly and more deeply alienate true followers of Jesus Christ?

I think it's sooooooooo right of this preacher to say this but I'll bracing for a major backlash from all other sides.

I think so too and sader is there will be so called evangelical leaders who will try to do what David Barton and others have sadly done:

falsely claim that Mormonism is somehow a christian denom.

Catholicism was a big issue during Kennedy's campaign.

That's been their game plan for years through the issues of homosexuality and abortion, it will never go away.

If you watch Dr. Jeffress being interviewed by CNN's John King, you will see Dr. Jeffress stating that M. Romney's conservative political views are not consistent across the board; his religion is only part of why Dr. J would prefer not to have him as the Rep candidate. He further states that if the two choices for president in the next election were B. Obama or M. Romney, he would vote for Mr. Romney.

In the interview with John King, as mentioned in my previous post, Dr. Jeffress states that he believes R. Perry is a true Christian and that's who we need as president. So, apparently, Dr. J. doesn't see R. Perry as a wolf in sheep's clothing. I don't yet know what to think about him.

2 Romney challengers dodge Christian question
    Associated Press - 10/9/2011 4:25:00 PM
WASHINGTON - Two Republican presidential candidates refused to say Sunday whether they believe Mitt Romney, a Mormon, is a Christian, while a third said he doesn't agree with a Texas pastor who called the religion a "cult."

Businessman Herman Cain and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann declined to answer questions about Romney's Mormon religion.

"He's a Mormon, that much I know," Cain said. "I am not going to do an analysis of Mormonism versus Christianity for the sake of answering that."

Bachmann called the issue a distraction.

"I think what the real focus is here, is on religious tolerance. That's really what this is about," Bachmann said. "To make this a big issue is ridiculous right now, because every day I'm on the street talking to people. This is not what people are talking about."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who runs in the GOP presidential campaign as a social conservative, was more direct, saying -- as Texas Gov. Rick Perry did Friday -- that he didn't consider Mormonism a cult. (See earlier story)

"I'm not an expert on Mormonism. All I know is that every Mormon I know is a good and decent person, has great moral values," Santorum said.

But when asked if he believed Romney is "a true Christian," Santorum spoke somewhat haltingly: "Mitt Romney is a true, he says he's a Christian. I believe he said Christian."

In Romney's 2008 campaign, Mormons said they felt maligned by claims they aren't Christian. The scriptures used by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints include the Old and New Testaments, and sacred books that contain the revelations of their 19th century founder Joseph Smith.

The recent questions about Romney's religion surfaced Friday after a Baptist pastor told reporters after introducing Perry at a forum that Romney was "not a Christian." Robert Jeffress, who made similar comments in 2008, also told reporters that Mormonism is a "cult."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, another GOP presidential contender, criticized Jeffress' comments on Sunday, calling them "very unwise and very inappropriate."

"I think that none of us should sit in judgment on somebody else's religion," Gingrich said. "I think he's a Mormon and Mormons define themselves as a branch of Christianity."

Cain and Bachmann appeared on CNN's "State of the Union." Santorum appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Gingrich appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation."

    Category: GOD OF THE BIBLE
What God and Jesus You Believe in Does Matter

    (2 Corinthians 6:14)

What God and Jesus you believe in does MATTER!!! Our nation is in spritual freefall.

The evidence is all around us.

The better percentage of two full generations have NEVER even been inside of a church in their life.

The Christian church is so fragmented its message has virtually ZERO influence on our society.

The mainline denominations have compromised the Truth of the Bible to the point most aren't even worthy of being called a church.

We have a generation of gutless pastors who don't even believe the Bible,
so it is no wonder why we have a generation of sheep who call themselves Christians yet support everything God stands against like homosexuality, killing babies, to name a few.

Churches in 2011 are more interested in building their numbers through modern seeker/purpose driven/emerging church/prosperity gospel marketing strategies

designed to put warm bodies in their multi-million dollar entertainment facilities as opposed to the simple preaching of the Gospel!

I was encouraged last weekend when the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Dallas, Robert Jeffress, cared enough about the eternal souls of men to answer a question correctly that Mormonism is a cult and they are NOT Christians!

It was sad to watch a parade of so-called Christian leaders than condemn Jeffress for simply telling the truth. Family Research Council head Tony Perkins, radio host Bill Bennett, and other "Christians," blasted Jeffress.

Not surprising since these men are more concerned about their "business," than the eternal souls of men!

Of course the candidates vying for the Republican nomination who have been public about their Christianity, Herman Cain, Michele Bachman, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich,

all use their "Christian faith" when it is beneficial,

yet when confronted with an opportunity to expose a lie from hell, they all passed.

Sad, but this is why I have told you often to never put your hope in a politician, since the problems in this nation are not political, they are spiritual, and in the end, politicians will be just that, politicians, not courageous men and women of God!

As I have publicly stated over and over, I could care less what fantasies Mormon cult member Mitt Romney, Glenn Beck,

and the rest of the members of their cult choose to believe in.

All I have ever asked is that they quit LYING to people that they are a Christian, since the teachings of the Mormon cult are 100% inconsistent with Biblical Christianity!

Are people so ignorant that they don't know when Romney or Beck speak of "god," they are speaking of a polytheistic being who was once a human and ascended to god status as satanic Mormon cult members believe they too will achieve one day?

When Romney and Beck speak of "jesus," they are not speaking of the Savior of the world,

but a created being through the sexual union of his polytheistic god and Mary, resulting in a CREATED BEING, the brother of Lucifer, NOT A DEITY!

Romney, Beck, and those in the Mormon cult believe the Bible is a flawed book and superceded by the writings of their cult's murdering, polygamist, pedophile, racist founder Joseph Smith!

FORGETTING ALL OF THE RIDICULOUS DOCTRINES OF JOSEPH SMITH'S CULT, DENYING THE DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST IS ALL YOU NEED TO CORRECTLY IDENTIFY MORMONS AS A SATANIC CULT.

HISTORY TELLS US THAT THE CHURCH 200 YEARS AGO RAN SMITH AND HIS MORMON CULT OUT OF EVERY TOWN THEY TRIED TO SETTLE IN AND PROPAGATE THEIR LIES FROM HELL?

CHRISTIANS 200 YEARS AGO CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD THESE FANTASTICAL BELIEFS WERE IN DIRECT CONTRADICTION TO BIBLICAL CHRISTIANITY AND A MORMON IS NO MORE A CHRISTIAN THAN A MUSLIM IS!!!

Romney, Beck, and other Mormon cult members have benefited from weak Christians who have sold out the faith in order to gain whatever fame and MONEY they can gain from being associated with them.

They have used people like David Barton of Wallbuilders, John Haggee, Jonathan Falwell of Liberty University, Jay Sekulow, Ralph Reed, Mark DeMoss, and many others,

who have given this CULT credibility and helped weak Christians and non-believers fall for the lies of the Mormon cult, that will lead them to an eternity in hell.

I love you and care about you so much.

I refuse to let tools of satan like Romney and Beck lie to millions of people and help lead their souls to hell.

There is only ONE GOD, and ONE JESUS, and ONE TRUTH. Our only hope is to turn to the God of the Bible, His Truth found in the Bible,

and find everlasting life through faith in His Son Jesus, the Jesus of the Bible! That is the ONLY message that can save our nation and save the souls of men.

IT DOES MATTER...FOR ETERNITY... WHAT AND WHO YOU BELIEVE IN!!! IT DOES MATTER WHAT JESUS YOU PUT YOUR FAITH IN!!!

I ask you this Biblcial question, "What fellowship does the light have with darkness!!!"

Thank you for your love, prayers, and sacrifce to help me bring His Truth to this dying world and the hope and love of Jesus Christ to the lost and hurting!!!

In His love and service, Your friend and brother in Christ,

    Bill Keller

In Defense of Robert Jeffress: Mormonism is Not Christianity
    Janet Mefferd
    Columnist, Townhall.com
    Oct 10, 2011

Several months ago, the media was in a tizzy over its sudden discovery of a doctrinal statement held by the church formerly attended by Minnesota Representative and GOP presidential contender Michele Bachmann.

On July 13, Joshua Green of The Atlantic breathlessly reported his exciting discovery: Did you know that the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s doctrinal statement states, in part, “… It is Scripture which reveals that the Papacy is the Antichrist?”

Well-coiffed TV newspeople were aghast. Blogs were abuzz. Talking heads were incensed. And they all asked the same question:

In light of this shocking theological discovery we’ve all just made, is Michele Bachmann an anti-Catholic bigot?

Meanwhile, confessional evangelical Christians were yawning. Martin Luther’s views on the papacy are in the Smalcald Articles, which he wrote in 1537, and which were incorporated into the Book of Concord, a compilation of Lutheran confessions, in 1580.

Hey, media: Way to blow the lid off a 500-year-old story, Lutherans joked with one another. To them, the media didn’t look groundbreaking. They looked embarrassingly ignorant of Christian history, in general, and well-known Lutheran doctrine, in particular. And to brand Bachmann a "bigot" – when she didn’t even attend the church anymore – was ridiculous.

But Michele Bachmann was the Christian “bigot” of July, and now it’s October.

So evidently, we now need the media to be outraged about another Christian position that isn’t news and was perpetrated by the newest “bigot” – Dr. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas.

On Friday, Jeffress introduced and endorsed Texas Gov. Rick Perry at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit. He went on to describe the faith of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney --the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – as a “cult.”

The reaction was immediate, and nowhere stronger than from Dr. Bill Bennett, former education secretary, my colleague at the Salem Radio Network and a man whom I greatly esteem and admire.

Bennett rebuked Jeffress for his reference to Mormonism as a cult. “Do not give voice to bigotry,” Bennett said in his speech at the same summit Saturday morning.

The critical floodgates opened once more. Again, the talking heads were outraged. The blogs exploded. What a bigot, that pastor! Here we go again.

The question is this: Why is it bigotry to call Mormonism a cult? As even Jeffress himself put it to reporters: “That is a mainstream (Christian) view, that Mormonism is a cult.”

He’s right. And again, Christians everywhere are saying: “This isn’t even news.
