If you have a social security number, they can find out anything they want. I wouldn't worry too much. They have satellites that can zoom in on you wherever you are now. Just smile and say CHEESE!!!!

Acts5:41........I don't have a webcam. Altho, I've been thinking of getting one so I can see my grandchildren in Wisconsin on a regular basis. I think seeing them outweighs any fear I might have of privacy issues. Sure hope we're going home very soon.................this is getting downright irritating!

Well - I don't have anything to hide either but that doesn't change the fact that sneaking around behind the scenes to get information without permission is wrong. They have no right to the private information they may be secretly getting such as passwords. People do shopping and banking online via their phones so their accounts can jeopardized. I don't think we should stand for it even though we have nothing to hide. I can't agree with being passive about this. First they put this software on there without permission, then say it cannot be removed? This is wrong!!

I really don't have any secrets. If anything, I am TMI.
funny that i found the plastic to be more 'grabby' as you say--good word for it.
i hear a lot of people don't like aluminum because its cold, but i actually like that. it heats right up in my hands anyway.

i was also told that if your hook gets too grabby, you can give it a polish with waxed paper and that makes it run smoother. If i get bamboo hooks and find them not slick enough i'll try that.

my online history will mostly show how i peck the "new posts" button here on RR like a trained pigeon... they can visit my thriving farm in Farmville and look at the endless silly pictures i post and the rare status update. They can also see my overflowing recipe box on my allrecipes.com account. For kicks they can look at my Paypal account and see all the $5 and $10 transactions i obsessively make buying veggie seeds from all over the country. For really incriminating evidence they can hack my account at Ravelry and see my entered yarn stash and my en queue patterns i'll never get to.

If anyone has ever had a computer issue and called customer service, you know what I am saying when the capability is out there to monitor everything you do.

Ever have one of the service reps take control of your computer from another country to fix your computer problem? Of course, they ask to take control of it before they do but the technology is there. You can bet if the government wants to know something about you badly enough, they can do it in a split second.

    Everything is recorded these days.

    EVERYTHING.

Yes they can. and normal people can do it to. there is a program that you can get that lets normal people be able to take control of the computer. i know this because my desktop broke before my hubby left, he fixed it but he intalled the program on his laptop before he left incase it did it again. He was deployed to Iraq and i called him letting him know that it went down again. From his deployed location in Iraq he was able to take control of the computer and fix it. I was able to watch my screen as he did it. I saw everything he did. and yeah he fixed it. i have never had a problem since. He has also been able to fix his Moms and his aunt Computers as well. One lives in FL and the other lives in GA. He didnt do those from Iraq but he was able to do it from home. I think now dont quote me on this but i think all one needs is the IP address of the computer. Now i did have to push a button to allow him to take control, but like Acts said the tech. is there and most likely the "bad guys" wont ask/dont need your permission to take control.

Ah, I think I have heard of something like that, now that you described it. I think it was maybe my dad or someone who was saying you can use it to access your work computer, say, from home, to pull up files, etc. and do work remotely. Wow.

There are many here that wouldn't be concerned with the content of their text messages or voice calls being disclosed, but there are huge issues with this. Aside from the many state and federal laws that are violated, Consider those that use their cell phones to discuss privileged or classified information. I personally carry two phones. One is used to discuss privileged information with attorneys and the other is on a DoD network. The idea that they could have a rootkit (trojan) installed on a device on the inside of a firewall on a DoD network or a corporate network could have unimaginable consequences. The idea of our medical records being accessible by unauthorized persons has many here troubled; many EMR systems have an android app and are accessed by android tablets and phones.

LOL! I feel the same way! Who CARES about my boring life...BUT...do you ever talk about
politics while on the phone? ONE remark could get us in huge trouble these days. They
ARE watching and listening! They already consider us terrorists. I think this is pretty
    scary.

How do I know if I have this kind of phone or not? I've used it for FB but not very often and wouldn't use it for RR.

    Oh, I don't touch politics.

The only political thing I have said all year - I had a dream Michelle Obama and I were discussing vegetable gardening. Ron was evangelizing the Mr, with great results.

My Dad worked "For the Government" and my sister worked for the Secret Service, so I don't say "nothing".

About the worst I get is the occasional bitter comment that the immigration reform people should have done it 50 years ago.

IMO, that will not happen before the rapture, not in America. In China, believers are rounded up and "deprogrammed" on a regular basis, and the church is probably stronger in China than it is in America. Even IF we see any kind of persecution (and that day has not arrived), it would strengthen and refine our faith to even higher levels.

There is no such thing as "privacy" anymore. I think a lot of people are only now realizing what they assumed was "private" is out there for everyone to read, has been for a while; and having a hard time adjusting.

As regards identity theft, I don't have anything worth stealing. There's quite a freedom in having a low income. I never have to worry about my "stuff", my "bank account" , etc.
It's interesting to see that others do not think this will happen before the rapture in America....I think it is completely concievable. I think back to just 10 years ago....so much has changed. What would another 10 bring?? I think, depending on the governmental stew we've got going on here and what leaders are in power, that anything is possible. If we, as Christians remain silent to our rapid loss of freedoms and privacy....of course, it could happen....IMHO

If you have an amdroid, you can look in the running processes for something with "IQ" in the name.

There are also apps being developed to find it. Just google carrieriq detect.

Not to enter this discussion, just wanted to comment that having a webcam and using Skype (free) was invaluable for seeing distant relatives. We did not concern ourselves with privacy. My son-in-law was in Iraq (army), and we did not speak about anything to do with his deployment or discuss any army info at all. It's for eveyone's safety to keep quiet.

But, I don't hesitate to use Skype. That's just me.

Oh, I do tons of video blogs. I upload video from my phone and digital camera (a hand me down from Mom). LOTS of videos out there on the web.

I do, however, have my webcam turned so it faces the curtains when I am not using it. I also disable it when I'm not using it. :dunno

Even on medication, I run mildly paranoid so it makes me feel better.
